Butterfly Staxx 2 is a continuation of last year’s Butterfly Staxx. The theme is still very much the same. We’re looking out at an enchanted meadow full of flowers and butterflies. It’s ridiculously pretty and serene. It could induce toothache, to be honest, and the prettiness and lightness of the theme won’t be for everyone.
One is inclined to believe that this is geared towards female slot players and not even all women will like the theme. It sure isn’t our cup of tea. But you still can’t deny that it’s pretty and nicely made.
The golden butterfly, a bunch of flowers and the playing card symbols rule the reels. The golden butterfly is worth 50 coins for 5 on a payline. All the flowers pay out 40 coins for such a win and the playing card symbols are each worth 20 coins for 5 on a payline.
The lotus flower is the wild symbol in this game and the roses are the scatter.
You can play this game from 0.25 to a staggering 1,250.00 per spin, which is highly unusual.
The main base game feature is quite similar to the original Butterfly Staxx game, but it does have a twist. Whenever at least 1 stack of butterflies lands on the reels, the butterflies will move to the left-most reel and we get a re-spin. As long as we keep adding more butterflies, they will keep moving left to fill up the reels. If we manage to get two stacks of butterflies, the screen is split, and we get an additional set of reels.
The first reels will keep all the butterflies we’ve collected thus far, and the second reel set starts off with one stack of butterflies on the left-most reel. Now both reel sets are spinning to collect more butterflies. You can get up to three reel sets, if you manage to collect at least three stacks of butterflies. Decent wins are possible here.
You need three scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 to trigger the bonus feature. You get to pick between the Butterfly Spins or the Butterfly Frenzy.
Butterfly Spins – playing with 3 sets of reels from the start, only butterfly cocoons appear on the reels now. If they are active, they will become butterflies that will move down the reels to occupy the left-most position. Butterflies remain on the reels for all further spins and wins are added with every new butterfly. You only get 5 spins, but that usually suffices. We won about 40x our bet here.
Butterfly Frenzy – this is a pick-me game where butterflies fly across the screen. You start with 10 picks. In the first stage, butterflies are worth between 10 and 40 coins. You can also get stage upgrades when catching a butterfly, which will increase the coin wins and add another 10 picks to your counter. There are 5 stages in total and butterflies can be worth between 75 and 125 coins in the last stage. Once we made it to stage three (fairly quickly, too) and had a total of 30 spins, winning over 80x our stake here.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Butterfly Staxx 2 is 96.35%, which is pretty decent, especially since this is a slot with low volatility. Features are not difficult to trigger at all and whilst the maximum wins are nothing to write home about, the features are surprisingly entertaining.
If you can get past the theme, the features are making for a playable slot that won’t eat up your budget. Keeping our bet at €1 meant we were usually on the winning side of things, because the losses we suffered were regularly made up by wins. And the features added some padding to that.
Did we need a Butterfly Staxx 2 slot? Probably not. It is certainly better than the prequel. But it would have been just as okay to take the features and dress them up in a different theme. A different theme might have had a wider appeal, if we’re being honest.
