This is a bit of an oddball slot, combining two themes in one: circus and zombies. You can find slots for each theme separately, but this combination is unique. And why not? Plus, Relax Gaming did a pretty good job with this theme. The characters on the reels are creepy zombies and the soundtrack is reminiscent of the circus but in a very unpleasant way, which is probably the point here.
Of course, on the reels the extra creepy clown is not missing, but he is joined by a few other circus characters such as the knife thrower, a fortune teller and a female, who is probably a stand-in for the knife thrower and other acts. All these characters are drawn in impressive details and great to look at, in all their gory details.
The wild (golden curtains) is the most valuable symbol and gives us 50x our bet for a 5-of-a-kind win. The female assistant follows with 40x our bet in such a combination and the knife thrower gives us 30x our bet. The fortune teller is worth 25x our stake and the clown, at last, 15x.
Additionally, we get the generic card symbols from 10 to Ace, which look like they’ve seen better days but still manage to appear colourful.
There isn’t much going on during the base game of this slot. You can set your bet and choose autoplay and then simply get spinning. Wilds tends to help along with decent winning combinations every once and again, but the base game does not have a special feature that we could tell you about here.
Things get more interesting when you land a scatter on reels 1, 3 and 5. On reel 5, the scatter can come stacked, which is important when it comes to the Zombie Waves you might be able to choose from.
Landing 3 scatters on the reels, you will get 2 Zombie Waves. You get 3 Waves for 4 scatters. And 4 Waves will be yours, if you have 5 scatters on the reels.
During the Waves you’ll be picking among the zombie characters to grab free spins and extra wilds. The first Wave always determines how many free spins you will play (between 5 and 20), and the second, third and fourth Wave will give you extra wilds. Here any of the other symbols on the reels will be randomly chosen as an additional wild. That means, besides the regular wild symbol you could add three more. That can be very lucrative.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Zombie Circus is 96.92%. That’s excellent value and since wins tend to be relatively frequent on this slot, we felt like winners most of the time and never had to stretch our budget to its limits.
In terms of mechanics, this slot is not exactly riveting. The free spins feature can be a little hit and miss. When you only get 5 spins and 1 extra wild, big wins are unlikely. But getting 10 spins and 3 extra wilds is pretty decent. Plus, we had the feeling that the amount of spins each of the zombies hides remained the same throughout several free spin rounds we went through. You might want to pay attention to that.
It didn’t hurt that the we triggered the free spins at least once every 100 spins, which is great. So, whilst Zombie Circus isn’t the most exciting or sophisticated slot out there, it is worthwhile playing for frequent wins and easy gameplay.
