We get a bit of a magical or fairy tale theme with The Wiz. The background music certainly reminds us of a fairy tale. It is light and musical and almost boring. Especially considering that the wild symbol is a dragon in this slot.
It’s a lovely theme and nicely done, though not the most interesting in ELK Studios’ portfolio. They’ve impressed us more with other games, but we don’t want to complain.
The wizard himself, who remains nameless, is the bonus symbol in this game. He’s there to hand out free spins and not cash. The sun medallion is the most valuable symbol, giving us 10x our stake for a 5-of-a-kind win. The moon pays out 5x our stake for such a winning combination and the chest 4x. There’s also a little flask with a potion that still pays out 3x for a 5-of-a-kind win.
All in all, the symbols on the reels are quite beautiful and thankfully there are no playing card symbols anywhere to be seen.
This game comes with 178 ways to win, which means three matching symbols lining up on the reels from the left-most reel will yield a win in just about any combination of a payline.
Beware, for this is a volatile slot. So, for the most part you’ll be spinning away the reels, thinking nothing much will actually take place in the base game. However, two features are available that make things interesting, if they work out for you.
To begin with, the dragon comes with a random multiplier from 2x to 5x. For that multiplier to take effect, of course, the dragon has to be part of a winning combination. Nice base game wins are possible thanks to this little feature.
Secondly, when the wizard lands twice anywhere on the reels, a free re-spin is awarded. During that re-spin, all low-value symbols are cast off the reels and you play with only high value symbols. Add a multiplier wild into the mix and you could land some great wins here. Of course, you might also land a dud and not win anything on that spin.
Now, the free re-spin already gives you the idea of what to expect in the actual bonus game. Land the wizard three times on the reels and you will receive 5 free spins. Four wizards will give you 7 free spins and five will get you 10 free spins.
Usually, you will start out with 5 free spins. But for every additional wizard scatter you land on the reels, you will receive another free spin.
Before the spins commence, all low-value symbols will once again be removed and you only spin the reels with the four high-value symbols, the wild and the scatter. The wild, by the way, will also get boosted a little, because now it will not just come with its usual multipliers, but it will also become a wandering wild. On each spin it will move one position to the left until it moves off of the reels. You get a free re-spin for each spin that the wild remains on the reels.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for The Wiz is 96.1%, which is only average. Obviously, the slot is very volatile and thus you need to budget carefully. A few nice wins thanks to the multiplier wild and maybe a successful re-spin are possible, but more success is likely to wait in the free spins.
And even then, you can’t count on your luck. We’ve managed 37x our stake in the free spins with just the 5 free spins we initially received. And 27x our stake in wins with 6 spins and 2 re-spins. More than that is definitely possible, and these are just two examples of what we experienced during the free spins.
As it stands, we triggered the free spins three times during 400 rounds of playing, which is not too bad. And when you do get a free spin, a re-spin or even a multiplier wild, things feel pretty exciting. The only thing that bored us to tears was the background music.
