Max Quest: Wrath of Ra Review

Max Quest: Wrath of Ra is a game developed by Betsoft Gaming that cannot rightly be called a slot. This immersive multi-player RPG-like game can be played at online casinos such as Mr Green, Guts or Casumo.

Theme and basic information

Max Quest is not a slot game. You may see it called a slot game. But there are no reels and no classic paylines to be discovered anywhere on the screen. Instead we get an Egyptian-themed game that very much looks like a multiplayer RPG game. The graphics are cool and the best of what Betsoft has to offer. There’s incredible detail and we really do get the feeling of playing a fantastic new video game.

When you start the game, you get to pick an avatar. You choose among three male and two female characters, can pick the frame and background their picture appears in (10 options each) to add a more individual touch and you can name your avatar. Professor Finnley Orgarian explains the mission and welcomes you to the team. We’re entering an Egyptian tomb full of treasures and dangers.

Then you go to the settings screen. We very much recommend trying this game in demo mode first to get to know all the details and mechanics. You get your initial credit and your stats which show your kills, collected treasures, rounds played, XP points and your ranking. Your stats also include your level. On the right side of the screen you can set the value of the prize per bullet cartridge. This will essentially determine your bet level. Bullets can cost you between €0.01 and €1. Setting your bet level determines which rooms you have access to and how much your buy-in to the game will be. On the lowest level you can buy between 500 and 5,000 bullets. If you adjust the bet level, the buy-ins will be higher, and you get fewer bullets for your money, but they will be more powerful, and the coin wins will be higher as well.

Then set your game to auto-fire, which ensures that all bullets will hit a target whenever you fire. Finally, choose a room. You get 15 rooms to choose from on any bet level. When you play for real money, it also shows you how many players are already in that room (up to six can play in one room).

The Base Game

Whilst this is not a slot in the terms we are used to, we can still follow the same format we usually use when introducing a new slot to you. There is such a thing as a base game in Max Quest as well.

Your spin button will fire your weapon. You can use the basic weapon, which gets the most shots. Or you buy a treasure chest and get special weapons such as grenades, laser guns, and more powerful stuff. You’ll get fewer shots with these and you cannot choose which ones you’ll get when you buy a treasure chest. Only use them on your more powerful foes.

The game essentially consists of shooting at things. Mummies and lots of little critters run around the screen. Obliterate them and you earn coins and maybe even collect some treasure. But there are also a few warriors that are more powerful and bigger in size. Destroy them for bigger coin wins and better treasures, which may also include weapons here and there.

When you play in real-money mode, you and your fellow players will all be shooting at your foes in that room and get ranked according to most kills and most treasure collected. Better ranks can also yield extra wins.

The aim in the base game is to gain as many XP points as possible whilst shooting your foes and collecting treasure. When you have played through a round, your stats are shown, your wins and you get to start the next round.

It may sound repetitive, but oddly enough, this doesn’t get boring.

The bonus game

At the end of each round there’s a possibility of a deity appearing. That is essentially the bonus round in Max Quest. The deity, such as Ra, will appear with a few followers, who you will kill first. The god’s life force is shown on the right-hand side and you will need your full arsenal and best weapons to drain it. Each hit will weaken the god and earn you coins.

When played in multi-player mode, the players who contributed the most to destroying the god, will receive a reward at the end of this round as well.

Conclusion: A new generation slot game that you cannot truly lose

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Max Quest is supposed to be 96.1%. It strikes us as a little odd to even give an RTP, because this is hardly a slot game at all. What we have here is a multiplayer RPG game that you can play with real money. It’s a mix of two completely different types of gaming. You don’t get typical slot mechanics here, but you can play a shooter game with real money, which is not something that is ordinarily possible. But unlike in your usual RPG games, you cannot die. Which means you cannot actually lose.

Every shot is a hit and therefore a win. You may not win big with many of your shots and only playing with real cash will truly show you the winning potential of this game, because rewards are offered to higher ranked players. But beyond that, your funds are only drained when you buy new weapons and bullets. And as long as you keep obliterating your foes, you will keep earning coins.

We’re pretty sure that this is not the game for classic slot lovers. But it might be interesting for everyone who likes video games and wouldn’t mind betting some cash on their heroes. We don’t know how successful the Max Quest concept will be and if it will inspire more games of this kind. It is certainly a bold attempt at trying something completely different in the slot genre. Try it out in demo mode first and see if you like it enough to stake some real cash on it.
