Theme and general information

Temple Stacks comes with a somewhat vague jungle Aztec/Inca theme. Or Maya, if you prefer. One of those, in any case. We are in a jungle. The foliage is thick and we’re looking at a temple that frames the reels, which are either big blocks of rock carved with some stylised animal or another or massive gems in one of five colours.

Drums and flutes are playing in the background, adding to the jungle vibe. But on the whole, this is one of the more generic looking slots that Yggdrasil has delivered lately. They are capable of much more sophisticated graphics. We guess, however, that the gameplay was supposed to play centre stage here, which means the theme is just a setting, the means to an end. It suits the mechanics quite well.

The low value symbols show a lizard, eagle, snake, a fish and something that looks like a cross between a crocodile and a jaguar. We’re not sure on that one.

The high value symbols include the blue, green, pink, orange and red gems. Only the latter pays out for 2 on a payline and it also has the highest payout of 2.5x our stake for five of a kind. Whilst that may sound low, the many potential paylines this game hides can yield some decent wins.

The Splits mechanic and extra wins in the base game

Considering the huge popularity of the Megaways engine from Big Time Gaming, it’s no surprise that other developers attempt similar approaches. Play’n GO and Red Tiger have both given it a try, but with middling success. Now Yggdrasil is next to attempt something similar and because it is quite different to the Megways mechanics as we know them, it works much better. At least, for Temple Stacks: Splitz.

We start out with the usual 243 ways to win in this game. However, the Splitz Mystery Stacks can land on all five reels and split up to 12 times. In that case, we would have 5 reels with 12 symbols high and 248,832 ways to win. And if you would score such a combination, a win of 25,000x your stake would be yours. That is only possible in the free spins, however, as the stacks only split up to 9 times in the base game.

The Splitz Mystery Stacks can land anywhere on the five reels, where they will then spin and reveal a random reel symbol. If you get two such stacks on the first two reels, your chances of getting a win are decent. Beyond that, they are somewhat doubtful.

When multiple stacks land on the reels, at least three, and a winning combination is guaranteed, three of the symbols currently on reels that could form a win will appear above the reels with a value assigned. The stacks start spinning through those three symbols, eventually settling on just one of them and paying out the associated win. This can cause quite a bit of excitement and some really good wins. We once managed a win of 280x our stake thanks to the pink gem landing. This feature can also appear during the free spins.

It’s also worth noting that there is no regular wild in the game. If we land two free spin scatters, they will turn into a Free Spin Wild hybrid symbol, where the symbol acts as a wild during the re-spin we are about to receive but as a scatter if we manage to capture another free spin symbol.

Four different free spin modes

Free spins are triggered by three scatters, which show a spiked shield of sorts. Three scatters will yield a win of 1x our stake. Four scatters would win us 10x our stake. And five scatters would yield a win of 100x our stake.

There are four free spin modes. However, upon triggering the free spins for the first time, only the first mode is active. The next three times will unlock the next three modes and after that you can choose as you like.

This is what you will get:

The potential with 7 gold free spins and splitz of up to 12 is obviously the highest. We had one of our best wins with the Bronze free spins because we were able to retrigger the free spins. Three or more scatters will retrigger the free spins at the level you are at.

Verdict: An entertaining slot with high win potential

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Temple Stacks: Splitz is 96.1%, which is a very solid average. The game comes with an unusually high potential for Yggdrasil Gaming slots and its volatility ranges from medium to high. So, big wins are possible, though not exactly frequent.

In our first session, we weren’t particularly lucky with this slot. The performance was average, and we triggered the free spins once during 200 spins, whilst we didn’t see that base game feature with the many mystery stacks and extra high wins at all.

The second session was much better. We played roughly 700 spins, triggered the free spins 6 times in total and saw those extra wins twice. Once during the base game, where we scored the staggering 280x our stake. And once during the free spins, where we landed 90x our stake.

Later on, our wins felt more frequent and more solid and we ended our session up 400x our stake thanks to the regular appearance of the free spins, which usually won us between 50x and 150x our stake. Whilst Temple Stacks is not the most sophisticated looking slot Yggdrasil has produced, its gameplay is entertaining enough to keep you going and the potential is definitely interesting as well. And if you have a good run, you can stick with this one for a while.
