Opal Fruits is a video slot from Big Time Gaming with 6 reels and 5,625 ways to win. Originally exclusively released in May 2019 to LeoVegas and Royal Panda, the game received a wider release in June 2019 and can be played at all other Big Time Gaming online casinos as well now.
Pretty, sparkling fruits in space? That’s what you get in Opal Fruits. It’s a fruit machine set before a very beautiful view of the galaxy that is spinning away slowly in the background. The fruit and playing card symbols are brightly coloured, glittering and slightly transparent. It’s all very colourful.
The background sound is ethereal and fits in well with this theme, but only as long as the reels don’t get spinning. When that happens, you get more of an electro/disco tune that livens things up considerably.
We get grapes, melons, plums and pears on the reels alongside playing card symbols from 9 to A. The grapes are the most valuable symbols, paying 50 coins for 6 of a kind. Melons, plums and pears only pay between 0.8x and 2x our stake for such a win.
You can play this game from 0.10 to 20.00, making it suitable for the more budget conscious.
The setup of this slot is somewhat unusual, which you will notice right away. We get 6 reels and 3 standard rows. But two additional reels spin atop and below reels 2, 3, 4 and 5. They spin horizontally and only here can the wilds land. All other symbols are regular, however, and the two extra reels essentially expand the four middle reels to 5 rows. It looks more confusing than it is.
In Opal Fruits, we get cascading wins, which are called “Reaction” here. Once a symbol becomes part of a winning combination, a Reaction takes place and all symbols of that winning combination disappear and new symbols fall in from above, which continues until no more wins are created.
Also, the wild symbol only shows up on the horizontal extra reels. Every once in a while, a wild may have a 3x multiplier attached as well. If you get more than one 3x multiplier wild, they will add up, if on the same reel, or multiply, if on adjacent reels.
You trigger the free spins by collecting four scatters on the reels that form the word “FREE” together. If you land a 5th scatter, you will start the free spins with a 5x multiplier. If you trigger the free spins with 6 scatters, you’ll start with a 10x multiplier. You can imagine how often that’ll happen.
In any case, you start with 10 free spins and a 1x multiplier. That multiplier climbs with every Reaction (cascading win) by 1x. Should you reach the 10x multiplier, you’ll receive 5 more free spins. For every 10th multiplier, you will then receive another 5 free spins. Since the multiplier can keep climbing indefinitely, so could your free spins.
In reality, you’re likely to play 15 free spins and perhaps a 12x multiplier. Still, that’s pretty good.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Opal Fruits is 96.67%, which is a great value. But this slot is also fairly volatile, sometimes even very volatile. So, careful budgeting is advised to make it to those free spins.
The slot is definitely pretty and more fun than you would expect. When the free spins really get going, your pulse will follow, and big wins are possible here. Opal Fruits is very playable and worth a try.
