Theme and basic information

The theme of Jade Butterfly is surprisingly charming. It’s a touch Asian, which is mostly suggested by the framing of the reels and the background music. The lotus flowers dominating the reels are, of course, Asian inspired as well, but less overtly than with other Asian themed slots out there.

We actually kind wish we could see more of the lovely background with the cherry blossoms and mountains in the background. It is very pretty but you can see very little of it.

The flowers are colourful and quite pretty. The playing card symbols all have a little decorative butterfly somewhere, which is nice, though they are still fairly generic.

We don’t mind the theme at all here and it’s actually one of the better ones Pragmatic Play has produced, simply because they tend to come up with often generic themes to begin with. Jade Butterfly is very pretty, however, and that’s a bonus.

The golden lotus is the most valuable symbol on the reel, paying out 133x your stake for a win of 5 on a payline. The purple lotus still pays out 40x your stake for such a win. The orange lotus follows with 20x your stake. Only the golden and the purple lotus pay for 2 on a payline already, that includes winning combinations with the Jade Butterfly itself, which is the wild in this game.

Re-spin reels individually

The main feature in the base game is the ability to spin reels individually. That’s a gimmick available in other slots as well, so this is not unique. And the question always is, whether it’s worthwhile or not.

The cost of an individual re-spin is visible at the bottom of each reel. The higher the cost, the more likely is a decent outcome after a spin. It’s not guaranteed, mind you, and you can pay big bucks without the feature paying out once the reel stops. But we found winning combinations more often than not when we gave it a try.

You have to weigh the gain against the potential cost, of course, and it’s usually no longer worth it, once you have to spin more than twice to get anywhere. Also, the feature doesn’t work when you’re playing on auto-play.

Free spins with multipliers

The free spin scatter appears anywhere on the reels and you need three of them to trigger 13 free spins. More scatters will not give you more spins, but the coin prizes you can get will get bigger. You get 100x your bet for five scatters on the reels.

The free spin feature is not particularly special. You get those 13 spins and all wins are multiplied by 3x. And that’s about it. The good news is, you can re-trigger the free spins with three or more scatters. And you can do so indefinitely. That’s pretty cool and makes up for the fact that there isn’t much to the free spins to begin with. Though, we’re quite happy with the 3x multiplier. And during the free spins the wild shows up on three reels, not just on two as is the case in the base game.

Conclusion: A simple and pretty slot that can be a winner

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Jade Butterfly is 96.47%, which is good value. The volatility in this slot is medium, so wins are fairly regular, though rarely big. The golden lotus can bring the biggest wins, but you’ll rarely get more than 3-of-a-kind wins with it. Plus, the wild only shows up on reels 2 and 4, which can be effective but mostly you won’t see it at all.

Still, the slot is pretty, the mechanics are simple, and wins can be decent, even during the free spins to keep you playing for some time. Eventually, you might want to move onto something more exciting or interesting. But Jade Butterfly is a nice little diversion here or there.
