Ice and Fire Slot Review
Released in February 2020, this game can be played at online casinos such as Rizk, LeoVegas or Guts.
Theme and general information
It’s tempting to be reminded of A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series Game of Thrones was based on when first launching the Ice and Fire slot. And indeed, there are certainly similarities in these two fantasy worlds. There are dragons, there’s ice and fire, there are beautiful queens. But that is about where it ends and this Dreamtech online slot stands on its own.
We get two sets of 5×5 reels, which is unusual but not unheard of, where the left-hand side is dedicated to the world of ice and the other to the world of fire. Whilst we only get glimpses of each, it is pretty enough.
The two attractive elven queens are the highest value symbols on the reels, paying about 26x our stake for five of their kind. The ice and fire dragons follow with only a fraction of that value, about 3x our stake for five of their kind. White tiger and red wolf pay out half that still. Further symbols are the blue owl and the silver ring on the ice side and the fiery steed and glowing orb on the fire side.
The low value symbols are 10 to A playing card symbols.
The book is the wild in the game and the golden dragon egg is the scatter.
You can play this game from 0.12 to 30.00 per spin.
Shared Wilds and Cascading Wins
The Ice and Fire online slot comes with cascading wins. Both sets of reels spin at the same time and pay out wins independently from each other. Should a win occur on one side, all winning symbols are removed from the reels and new symbols drop in from above. This continues until no further wins occur on either side.
Whenever wild symbols land on either side of the reels, they automatically get shared to fill in the same position on the neighbouring set of reels. In the event of wilds landing on both reel sets in different positions, all wilds are shared. This is when wins become increasingly likely.
Two different Free Spin Modes
Cascading wins in this video slot trigger one of two types of free spins. If you manage to get four wins in a row, the counter atop the reels is filled and free games are started. We are asked to choose the fire or the ice dragon and it is then revealed how many free spins we receive, 8, 10 or 15 and 100 or 150 extra wilds on top.
It doesn’t actually matter which of the two dragons you choose. Only the scenery changes, but the two versions play out exactly the same and you have the same chance to get any number of free spins and extra wilds.
The good thing is wins are easier to come by and four more consecutive wins would retrigger the feature. However, whilst more free games are added, we don’t get more wilds.
The other way to launch a completely different free spin feature is by collecting 3 scatters anywhere on the two sets of reels. With 3 scatters we get 10 free spins. Any additional scatter on top of that would add 5 more free spins to the count.
Now the Win Multiplier is added to the game. For every cascading win we receive a 1x multiplier, which can theoretically climb indefinitely. Since it is possible to retrigger the feature with 3 more scatters, we can keep getting free spins and higher multipliers as the wins keep coming.
Verdict: A great-looking fantasy slot with interesting features that fails to consistently entertain
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Ice and Fire is 96.64%, which is excellent value. This is a highly volatile slot and even though symbols land stacked, wins can be a rare occurrence. Whilst the free spins are triggered every 150 to 200 spins on average, it can be a little easier to launch the free games, if you are lucky. And we have almost always been able to retrigger the free games thanks to those additional wilds.
The overall potential of the game is pretty good, too. Dreamtech claims that wins of 19,139x our stake are possible. We’ve never really seen anything beyond 100x our stake, to be honest. And that’s where the problem is. The game is well-executed and comes with interesting features. But it’s inconsistent and there are long stretches where seemingly nothing seems to happen and no wins seem possible.
Ice and Fire could leave a hefty dent in your budget if you aren’t careful. But it’s worthwhile to check out at least once to judge for yourself.
