Dragon’s Luck Megaways Slot Review
Released in October 2019, this game can be played at online casinos such as ComeOn!, Casumo or PlayOjo.
Theme and general information
Dragon’s Luck Megaways is a new iteration of Red Tiger’s original slot Dragon’s Luck from 2015. The game also exists in another version, Dragon’s Luck Power Reels. Where the Power Reels are Red Tiger’s own version of the Megaways engine, they clearly decided to obtain a Big Time Gaming license for the Megaways engine regardless. Perhaps it has become impossible to ignore the enormous appeal of the Megaways slots. Plenty of developers have used it now and Red Tiger has jumped aboard the train as well.
Dragon’s Luck looks still very much the same as the two earlier versions. High in the Himalayan mountains, we see a beautiful landscape in the background, whilst the front is dominated by a temple.
The symbols also look the same as in the original slot. We get Asian-inspired playing card symbols from 10 to A and the high-value symbols, which are the 138 coin, a Chinese doll, a koi and a lotus flower. The coin is the most valuable symbol, paying 38x our stake for 6 on a payline. The other symbols of higher value pay between 2x and 3.8x our stake for such a win.
There is also a mystery symbol on the reels, which are the Dragon Coins. You won’t find wilds or scatters here, however.
You can play this game from 0.10 per spin to 10.00 per spin, though this may vary between casinos.
Dragon Coins, Mega Coins and Dragon’s Blessing
In the absence of wild symbols, bonus games or free spins, what is it that keeps this game going? Why should you play it? Well, the Dragon Coins, which are our mystery symbols, appear on almost every spin. Then they take a spin on the reels and transform randomly into any of the regular reel symbols.
They don’t necessarily settle on a symbol that would guarantee a win, however. In fact, more often than not they won’t yield a winning combination. But sometimes they do and the more Dragon Coins you get on the reels, the bigger your chance at a win.
There are also Mega Dragon coins, which cover 2×2, 3×3 or 4×4 symbols. They will also spin and then transform into a random reel symbol. Chances for a win are much better with these Mega Coins.
Additionally, when landing a Mega Coin, the chance that the Dragon’s Blessing will make an appearance is much better as well.
As you will notice, there are dragons winding around the columns framing the reels. When the Dragon’s Blessing is issued, they will coil more tightly around the columns and breathe fire onto the reels. This will result in all Dragon Coins and Mega Coins transforming into a higher value symbol. In other words, we get a symbol upgrade.
Whilst this doesn’t happen often, it happens often enough to yield some wins and keep you going.
Conclusion: A better Dragon’s Luck than the original but with lower payout potential
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Dragon’s Luck Megaways is 95.69%, which is a little disappointing as it is less than either of the other two Dragon’s Luck slots. It is also below average, which makes things even more disappointing.
That said, Dragon’s Luck Megaways is the best out of all three Dragon’s Luck slots and definitely very playable. Even though we only get one real feature with some special effects, it can still be quite effective and the maximum payout is 10,368x our stake, which is achieved thanks to the 138 coin across just about all paylines.
Still, it would have been nice to see a payout above 96%. Even though this game is not hugely volatile, it can eat into your budget. But you can have fun with this game for a while, if you budget carefully.
