Theme and general information

Brazil Bomba takes us very obviously to the Carnival in Rio. However, we’re not in the thick of it amongst the 2 million and more people joining in the festivities during the carnival in Rio. Instead, we find ourselves at the beach in a sunset setting. One of the famous, scantily clad dancers is joining us on the left-hand side of the grid, holding a canon that springs into action every time a bomb lands on the reels. But more on that later.

It’s a surprisingly light and colourful slot for Yggdrasil. They tend to go to the darker side of things, but here we get lovely colours, a lively carnival-inspired soundtrack and a dancer swinging along to the tunes. It’s well-drawn, though not as mind-blowing as some other Yggdrasil slots have been in the past.

This is, by the way, the very first grid slot Yggdrasil has developed, and the cluster pays work differently than we are used to from other developers. A minimum of six matching symbols is required to form a winning cluster. But matching symbols can land vertically, horizontally and even diagonally touching each other, which makes for some interesting formations.

Also, we get cascading wins here with Dropdown Wins, whereby winning symbols are removed from the grid to make room for new symbols falling in from above.

The red drum (or perhaps firecracker) symbol is the highest value symbol on the reels, paying 1,000 our stake for a full screen of 48 symbols. The yellow, pink, purple, green and blue drums (or boxes) follow behind in an extensive paytable. There are also four low value diamond shaped symbols in red, yellow, pink and purple.

There is no wild in the game and the scatter simply says Free Spins.

Bombs in the base game

There are two features in the base game to look out for. The most obvious one is the multiplier that increases with each consecutive win. It’s a favourite for cascading wins and we’re glad to see it here as well. In the base game, you will rarely see it climb beyond 3x, however.

Additionally, bombs will randomly land on the grid and then the canon springs into action, exploding the bomb in a star formation, taking surrounding symbols with it and making room for new ones from above. This doesn’t necessarily create wins, but it may. It’s worth noting that the bombs don’t remove free spin scatters or other bombs currently on the grid. And only 1 bomb at a time will explode.

Free spins with ever increasing multipliers

You get 5 free spins when three scatters land on the grid. If four scatters are on display, 10 free spins are awarded. Consequently, we get 15 free spins for five scatters and 20 for six scatters.

During the free spins, we also get the bombs on the grid and they behave exactly the same as in the base game. The only difference in the free spins is that the climbing multiplier keeps climbing during the free spins. Even when you have a losing spin, the multiplier stays at the latest increase, instead of resetting again to 1x.

This means we can get multipliers of 10x and beyond, especially the more free spins we managed to get.

Verdict: A colourful grid slot with great win potential

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Brazil Bomba is 96.3%, which is a good value. The maximum possible pay out in this relatively high volatile slot is 8,975x our stake, which is decent, though we have seen more. We’ve also seen considerably less, of course.

You can expect a hit frequency of a little over 20%, meaning about every fifth spin yields a win. The downside is that free spins don’t trigger that often. We played easily 300 spins during various sessions before we hit the free spins once. And even then, you may only end up with 5 free spins.

Still, the game is entertaining and likeable and when we do get those increasing multipliers, some awesome wins are definitely possible. For a first grid slot, Yggdrasil hasn’t done too badly, though they don’t manage to give Play’n GO a run for their money just yet.
