Vikings Unleashed Megaways is the latest Megaways slot from Blueprint Gaming with 6 reels, up to 6 rows and up to 117,649 ways to win. Originally released in December 2018, this slot can be played in online casinos such as ComeOn!, LeoVegas or Guts.
Vikings Unleashed Megaways is also the latest slot with a Vikings theme. There’ve been plenty of those in the last year and this Blueprint Gaming slot doesn’t add anything new to the theme. That’s not to say that it doesn’t look good. In fact, the game looks great. Set on a longship, we can see the sea ahead of us, waves splashing against the bow of the ship. The battle-inspired soundtrack is fitting to the theme even though we’re not in battle just yet. But Vikings were always ready, right?
On the reels we find familiar characters (familiar from Yggdrasil’s Vikings slots, to be honest). There’s the wizened old Viking, the blond weapon-wielding warrior, the red-bearded Viking and a fierce-looking Viking maiden. In addition, we get the low value playing card symbols from 9 to A.
The blond warrior is the highest value symbol giving us 50x our stake for a 6-of-a-kind win. He’s the only one already paying for two of a kind. The red-bearded Viking follows with 7.5x our stake for such a winning combination and the Viking maiden and the old Viking each give us only 2x our stake.
You can play this game from €0.20 to €10, making it suitable for those who mind their budget.
Looking at the Vikings Unleashed Megaways slot, there seems to be a lot going on. We get six reels, which usually have between 2 and 5 symbols each. But there’s a seventh reel above the main set of reels, adding a sixth row to the whole thing. Oddly, the extra reel spins sideways. But when it comes to the symbols displayed here, it acts just like an additional row to the main set of reels.
In the top left-hand corner, you can see the ways to win available on each spin. Usually, you’ll win at most three ways in one spin. The main attraction in the base game is the fact that upon each consecutive win, we get cascading reels, meaning the winning symbols are whisked away and all other symbols fall down into the gap, leaving room for new symbols from above and hopefully giving us additional winning combinations. Whilst that doesn’t cost extra, it also doesn’t give us anything extra in terms of multipliers, which is often the case with such a feature.
Beyond that, the base game comes with a Mystery symbol, which can transform into any of the other regular symbols. And that’s about it in the base game, so the question really is, why keep spinning?
The question is even more pertinent considering that this is a fairly volatile slot, so wins are rare and rarely big. In addition, there’s no real reason to keep spinning the reels because you can actually buy your way into the free spins.
This is what it will cost you:
If you want to spin your way to the free spins, you’ll need four scatters to get 12 free spins. Any additional scatters will add 5 free spins to your starting number of free spins. And during the free spins, any additional 3 scatters add further 5 spins.
Before you start the free spins, you’ll get to a gamble screen, where you can spin two wheels: one for +1 free spins and the other for a 1x multiplier. Chances to win extra spins and multipliers here are pretty good. But if you lose, you will lose the bonus round entirely, so gamble at your own risk.
Once you start the free spins with how ever high a multiplier you managed to get, you can look forward to increasing your multiplier on every single win you manage to get. And there’s no limit to how high it can get. We managed 17x at one point and ended up with over 200x our stake in total winnings.
That was when we had decided to buy the free spins, starting with 13 spins and a 3x multiplier. Was it worth it to pay 100x our stake into the free spins? We think it was.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Vikings Unleashed Megaways is 96.5% in the base game. But as we’ve seen, it increases when buying your way into the free spins feature. Overall, the value is excellent, but do keep in mind that the slot is highly volatile and your best chance at winning big is indeed in the free spins.
If we’re being honest, the Megaways slots can be a bit much. You never really win in more than five ways on a given spin, so what’s the point of having so many ways? You’d have to spin forever to see truly magnificent wins with the Megaways feature alone. We do like the cascading wins in this slot, though and we found it worthwhile to buy our way into the free spins as well. But perhaps we were just lucky and you’ll have to decide for yourself, whether you will find it worthwhile or not.
