Pirates 2: Mutiny is a video slot from Yggdrasil Gaming with a 5×5 grid and cluster pays. Released in April 2020, this game is a LeoVegas exclusive, which means it can currently only be played for real money at LeoVegas.
Aargh, matey! We’re back with the pirates! Yes, pirates are a popular theme and the majority of slots featuring them tend towards the fun side of things. That’s also true of Pirates 2: Mutiny, which is the follow-up from 2018’s Pirates: Smugglers Paradise.
If you know the prequel, you’ll recognise Mutiny instantly as most of the symbols have been recycled. That said, however, Mutiny gets much more depth, detail, fresher colours and simply more of an edge than Smugglers Paradise. The prequel is downright pale in comparison and we don’t mind the visual upgrade at all.
The backdrop is an island with dark clouds in the sky and a rock formation shaped like a shark. The visuals are cool and there’s much to discover here.
Once again, we get low value card suit symbols (hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades), medium value symbols that include a hook, cutlass, pistol and bottle (this time pointing towards the left as opposed to the right in Smugglers Paradise) and four pirates. The blue parrot from the first game has been replaced with a blue-haired female pirate, but everyone else is the same, the deckhand, the redhead with the eye patch and the captain with the purple hat. Here they just look a lot more distinct with more character.
The redhead is the most valuable symbol, paying 25x our stake for a cluster win of 25 symbols.
You can play this slot from 0.20 to 100.00 per spin.
Of course, the gameplay has also been upgraded. Whilst Mutiny still kept the same features we’ve seen in Smugglers Paradise, some new ones have been added.
We still get the Dropdown wins, where a winning combination of at least six matching symbols in a cluster will be kept on the reels (as well as all other matching symbols anywhere else on the reels), and the non-winning symbols are removed. The winning symbols drop down on the grid and new symbols fall in from above. Once again, a dropdown is initiated if new matching symbols should line up with the current cluster.
When no more matching symbols land on the reels, wins are paid out for all matching symbols currently on the reels.
You will also notice the multipliers on the right-hand side. If you manage to fill the rows with the dropdown symbols completely, multipliers will be activated. You need to fill the two bottom rows to activate the 2x multiplier. Three filled rows activate the 3x multiplier, four rows the 5x multiplier and a complete grid of the same symbol adds the 25x multiplier.
Then there is the Tsunami feature, which can be triggered on a non-winning spin. At least six matching symbols need to be in view for the tsunami to trigger and sweep all other symbols away, triggering a dropdown.
Finally, the Canon Blast can also appear on a losing spin and blow away all low value symbols, creating a dropdown that way.
The free spins are triggered when we manage to unlock the three locks on the left-hand side. Keys will land on the reels to make that possible.
We get 7 free spins and at the beginning of the free spins, one of the four characters is randomly chosen to replace all other characters and become the only high value symbol in the game.
During the free spins, the multipliers will also come into effect and not reset at the end of a losing spin. Plus, the Tsunami and Canon Blast are both in play during the free spins as well.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Pirates 2: Mutiny is 96.2%, which is slightly less than Smugglers Bay had to offer. But that’s about the only thing that has not been improved. Mutiny comes with medium to high volatility and a hit rate of a little over 21%, which is comfortable most of the time.
The features and the theme make Mutiny very entertaining and super playable. We never had difficulties triggering the free spins and thanks to the Dropdown feature, playing just 100 spins can stretch out forever. In that time, you can easily trigger the free spins three time if you are lucky. And if you are not, you might want to move on for something more exciting.
But if you are looking for some light and consistent entertainment and decent potential with 4,400x your stake, Pirates 2: Mutiny is definitely a great choice.
