Avatars Gateway Guardians Slot Review
Released in November 2019, this game is a LeoVegas Exclusive game, which means it can only be found at LeoVegas right now.
Theme and general information
Avatars Gateway Guardians is unique in more ways than one. Set on an alien planet, the design of the reels is one we haven’t seen before. Yggdrasil is well-known for their innovative design and gameplay. This slot is a prime example.
We’re looking at a ring of symbols, which reminds us a little of the Stargate. In the base game, the ring is separated into 6 wedges. We get three rings, each with 6 segments, which makes for 18 symbols on these ‘reels’.
The avatars themselves, or perhaps the Gateway Guardians, are present on these reels, looking a little like benevolent deities. They are beautifully designed, though you hardly ever get to see their full faces. They come in a dark orange, purple, green and blue. The dark orange one is the highest value of the lot and pays out 40x our stake if it lands fully on one of the wedges.
The other three are worth between 5x and 20x our stake for such a win. Additionally, we get 3 glowing dots that can also fill those wedges and make up the low value symbols.
Initially, the spinning of those rings looks a little confusing, but once you’ve played a few rounds, you’ll get the gist of it.
You can play this game from 0.10 to 200.00 per spin.
The Hot Spot and the Multiplier
In the base game, you’ll notice a highlighted wedge. This is the hot spot. Whenever a winning combination lands there, a multiplier wheel appears below the main reel set. It starts with a 1x multiplier and every multiplier showing up on each spin of the wheel, will be added to the overall multiplier.
Eventually, you will likely get the ‘collect’ symbol and the multiplier that you have accrued until that point will be applied to your win. It may also grow up to 101x, which is the maximum possible multiplier.
Free spins with more hot spots
The free spins are triggered by landing three free spin segments anywhere on the reels. During the free spins, you get 8 wedges, meaning each ring has 8 segments. Hot spots are in play as well, but how many you get depends on how many free spin segments ended up in the hot spot in the base game.
If none landed in the hot spot, you will get a standard two hot spots during the free spins. If 1, 2 or all 3 free spin segments landed in the hot spot, you will get 4, 6 or even 8 hot spots during the free spins.
You get 8 free spins and the rings start spinning again. Whenever one or more winning combinations land fully in one or more hot spots, the multiplier wheel will show up once again and the multiplier will be added to all winning combinations that are inside a hot spot.
Of course, the more hot spots you have, the better the chance that you will get more than one winning combination that gets a multiplier applied.
Conclusion: An utterly unique game that doesn’t quite reach its potential
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Avatars Gateway Guardians is 96.3%, which is above average and great value. This is, however, a highly volatile slot and you may not see any wins for many spins. So, budget carefully.
Avatars is utterly playable, and you’ll quickly get sucked into it, provided you have a player’s account at LeoVegas. It’s fun and unique, and it looks fantastic.
Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t quite reach its potential. The maximum payout is capped at 2,525x our stake, even though a ring set full of the dark orange symbols inside 8 hot spots and the maximum 101x multiplier technically yields a 4,040x win our stake. Mind you, such a win is probably even less likely than 1:4,040, but it is possible.
We would have liked to see a higher potential here, but even without it, the game is definitely enjoyable. You may not sign up at a new casino for it, though.
