IGT

International Game Technology PLC, better known as IGT, is a casino software developer for online and land-based casinos that has been around for decades. As a multi-national provider, IGT is certainly one of the biggest, if not the biggest, gambling solution provider in the world. They claim to be the “global leader across all channels”, which does not seem too farfetched. Learn all about IGT here.

About IGT

International Game Technology PLC can trace its origins back to the 1950s when its founder William ‘Si’ Redd first invested in juke boxes and pinball machines. When he moved to Reno, Nevada, in the 60s, Las Vegas was still very much in its infancy, but Redd’s interest in gaming was triggered and in the 70s he founded Sircoma (short for Si Redds Coin Machines). In 1979 he obtained the license to develop the very first video poker game, which proved so incredibly popular that Redd went public with International Game Technology in 1981.

The rest is history, as they say. Always ahead of their times, IGT invested heavily in microprocessors in the 80s and eventually built their first electronic spinning reel slot.

Their first progressive jackpot, Nevada Megabucks, was launched in 1986 and came with a jackpot of $1 million.  Slot game after slot game was developed for land-based casinos and to this day IGT is the largest supplier of slot machines around the US.

The company continued to expand, buying smaller companies, such as the British Barcrest, from around the world, incorporating them as subsidiaries.

In the 2000’s the expansion continued and with the acquisition of WagerWorks, now also a full subsidiary, IGT finally broke into the online casino business. Many of their popular slot machines and casino games were adapted for online use, expanding the business into a whole new area.

In 2014 IGT was itself acquired by GTECH, the Italian iGaming giant. IGT was bought for a staggering $6.4 billion. Interestingly it was decided that the company would continue as International Game Technology PLC instead of being swallowed up under GTECH.

Nowadays IGT has some 12,000 employees worldwide with main offices in Nevada, London and Rome and assets worth around $15 billion.

IGT’s Online Game Portfolio

Whilst IGT started out as a slot machine provider for land-based casinos, which is still a huge part of the business, we’re obviously more interested in their online casino games. They have made thousands of slot machines for land-based casinos and adapted hundreds of them for online casinos. That aside IGT offers a full range of online casino games as well, though.

Slots

It’s virtually impossible to list all the slots that IGT has ever made. There are just too many of them. IGT has always been at the forefront of innovation, though a few of their games are now a little dated, reminding us a little too much of their land-based originals.

Still, newer releases often offer fantastic graphics, compelling gameplay and great bonus features. Some of the newer slot developers may be a little more sophisticated and innovative, but IGT still manages to release new games that become instant favourites.

Among those titles are: Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, Sherlock Holmes – The Hunt for Blackwood, The Dark Knight, Star Trek, Orange is the New Black, Fire Horse, Bridesmaids, Family Guy and Balloonies.

You’ll notice a few branded slots here, which are a specialty for IGT. The majority of branded slots are based on movies, but there are quite a few based on TV shows as well.

Table Games

Additionally to their large range of slot games, you’ll also find an extensive selection of table games in their portfolio. You’ll find many different versions of Roulette, Blackjack and Baccarat, of course, as well as a good selection of Casino Poker games such as Red Dog, Pai Gow, Casino Hold’Em and more. Surprisingly we couldn’t find Craps or Sic Bo, but perhaps we looked in the wrong place. It would be rather surprising if IGT didn’t make versions of those two games as well.

Video Poker and other games

Considering that IGT started out with video poker games, it’s hardly surprising that they also have a good selection of video poker games and are considered the leader in this particular section.

Additionally you’ll find Keno and Bingo as well as other lottery games in their portfolio.

IGT Progressive Jackpots

One of IGT’s claims to fame is, of course, the development of the first progressive jackpot, which was the Nevada Megabucks jackpot.

In their online games portfolio you’ll mostly come across the MegaJackpots, of which there are several:

  • Siberian Storm
  • Cleopatra
  • Wolf Run
  • Isle of Plenty
  • Star Lanterns

These jackpots easily reach six-figure sums, but have been known to be won at over $1 million as well.

Other products

For the time being IGT does not seem to have live tables or live studios to offer live games. But the company does offer Poker, Bingo and Sportsbetting solutions among their products. Especially online casinos that work exclusively with IGT will offer more of their products.

A few years ago IGT’s Poker business was much bigger than it used to be and whilst Poker is still listed among their products, it is now only a rather small part.

Safety and Security

IGT has been around for decades and compliance, safety and licensing are a big topic with the company. Thus they make sure to be incredibly transparent when it comes to compliance. Lots of information can be found on their website on the topic.

Additionally IGT games are licensed via the UKGC and Alderney.

The company is also listed at the New York Stock Exchange and all games are thoroughly tested for randomness and fairness.

IGT works with a large number of reputable online casinos and can be considered very safe indeed.

And let’s not forget the dozens of industry awards that IGT has received over the years, which are testament to the company’s success, but also how well regarded it is.

Play IGT Games Mobile

Nowadays IGT is building their games on HTML5, which means they’re available for play on all devices, whether desktop or mobile, whether Android or iOS.

All new releases can be automatically played on mobile devices as well nowadays, but older titles may never be available. As it is, IGT’s portfolio is simply too big to make it feasible to optimise older games that are hardly played anymore for mobile as well.
