Nyjah Huston – Skate for Gold Slot Review
Released in July 2020, this game is available at online casinos such as Kaboo, Casumo or Vera&John.
Theme and general information
You may never have heard of Nyjah Huston, who is real and whose name is really spelled like that. He’s a professional skater who has won tons of prizes and may even have made more money than the likes of Tony Hawk, whose name is simply easier to remember.
This game is based on Nyjah and revolves just around him and his profession. He’s present in the symbols and the look of the game has tried to emulate the scene as best as possible. We’re in Southern California, perhaps in Venice Beach, the sun is setting, and a skate park is visible in the distance among some palm trees.
We get the lower value symbols that spell “S, K, A, T and E” in graffiti style as well as Nyjah in various skater poses and his actual countenance, which is the highest value symbol at 25x our stake for 5 of his kind.
In terms of look and atmosphere, you certainly get the skater feel with this game, though the style is not totally unique and somewhat cartoonish. It is well enough done, though it’s not the most sophisticated looking slot Play’n GO has given us.
You can play this game from 0.10 to 100.00 per spin.
Combo Meter and Wildboard Re-Spins
Randomly during the base game, a Combo Meter can appear above the reels. It will show three of the four skater figures in a random order, which you then hope to land anywhere on the reels below.
If that happens, the Wildboard Re-Spins are triggered, which adds two regular and one expanded wild that covers the whole reel it lands on. It may even be possible to turn the expanded wild into a golden multiplier wild, which adds a random multiplier of 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x to any win it is part of.
Five wilds are worth 40x our stake in this game.
Free Spins with more of the same
Whilst the low value symbols are the five letters spelling SKATE, you will notice that they randomly have a golden background. If these symbols actually land to spell S, K, A, T, E across their five respective reels, the free spins are triggered.
We get 12 free spins and on every one of them the Combo Meter is active, making it more likely to land that combination and triggering the Wildboard Re-Spins. Whenever that happens, we not only get to play the Wildboard Re-Spins but we get +2 free spins on top of that.
On the next spin, the Combo Meter resets to a different combination and we get a new chance at triggering the Wildboard Re-Spins.
Verdict: An entertaining slot with solid features that is not a memorable as it could have been
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Nyjah Huston – Skate for Gold is 96.2%, which is solid, especially for a slot with no more than medium volatility. The payouts are decent for the higher value symbols and the features are playable. We get a maximum potential of 5,000x our stake, though this game rarely feels as if this is a feasible option.
It’s entertaining enough, though probably only fans of Nyjah or skateboarding itself will be keenly interested in the theme. The rest of us may give it a go and then a pass because the game simply doesn’t reach its full potential.
Play’n GO could have made this much more unique and exciting than it turned out to be. Instead, it’s another run-of-the-mill slot churned out among half a dozen others, which fails to have much of an impact.
