Pirate’s Plenty – Battle for Gold Slot Review
Pirate’s Plenty – Battle for Gold is a video slot from Red Tiger with 5 reels and up to 30 paylines. Released in August 2019, this game can be played at online casinos such as PlayOjo, Casumo or Guts.
Theme and basic information
We’re back with the pirates in this slot. A sequel to Pirate’s Plenty – The Sunken Treasure, things are taken up a notch in Battle for Gold. Once again, we’re in the Captain’s cabin, looking out the main window, coins scattered about, weapons at the ready and the lamp swinging gently with the rhythm of the sea. The sun is setting in the distance, bathing everything in a golden glow.
The detail in the slot is gorgeous and even more beautiful than in the first Pirate’s Plenty slot. Just look out the window and notice the patterns and colours in the clouds.
It’s all very well done and the attention to detail here is great. It keeps the theme recognisable but it’s still its own slot.
The most valuable symbol on the reels is the skull, which pays out 600 coins for a win of 5 of a kind. the Captain’s hat follows with 180 coins for such a win. Canon, pistol and bottle of poison are worth between 90 and 150 coins for 5 on a payline. The remaining symbols are the gold coins with the card suits on them.
You can play this game from 0.10 to 20.00 per spin.
Collect the maps to move your ship
In the base game, the focus is once again on that map, which is now spread across a fourth row atop the initial 3 rows. At first, you’ll play on a 5 reel, 20 payline slot. And as you keep collecting maps (which may land in clusters or only once in a while), your ship moves along on the map until it hits the cross and you unlock the 4th row. You need 50 maps to achieve that, which may take you between 200 and 300 spins.
Keep in mind that your wager is set when you collect maps. If you change your bet size, the map is reset, and you have to keep collecting them anew. Go back to your previous bet size, and your progress is restored. Similarly, once the 4th row is unlocked, changing the size of your bet will lock it once more. You therefore can’t go in for the 0.10 per spin and change the bet to 0.50 once the 4th reel and all those extra wilds are unlocked.
Speaking of extra wilds. Not only do you get a 4th row of symbols and 10 more paylines, further wilds are added to the reels, which can now also have up to 5x multiplier.
The regular wild in the game is the little monkey, which lands on the reels very randomly, collects all low-value symbols and then remains in the position of the last symbol he stole. The empty spaces are then filled with high-value symbols, hopefully resulting in a win.
With these new wilds, the chances of wild winning combinations increase.
Battle it out in the free spins
Three battle spins scatters will trigger the free spin feature. A random number of spins is revealed (usually between 8 and 12) and you’re looking at a new setup. Two ships alongside each other that are in battle. A new symbol is introduced to the reels, which is a canon that is loaded to fire. When it lands on the reels, both ships will fire at each other. If the cannonballs land on the reels, they will leave behind a sticky wild for the remainder of the spins. If the cannonballs hit the other ship, a free spin is added to your counter.
This is essentially the same whether you play with the extra row or not. So, you’re not missing out on any features if you haven’t unlocked the 4th row yet. During the free spins, the map disappears anyway, and you play with either 3 rows or 4 rows, depending on where you are at. You won’t be able to collect further maps during the free spins.
Also, Captain Blackbeard may show up during the battle and throw extra wild bombs onto the reels, which can be a great help to create more wins. Don’t be surprised, if he doesn’t show up, though. His appearances seem to be rather rare.
Conclusion: A fun new sequel that can be a stretch on your budget
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Pirate’s Plenty – Battle for Gold is 96.07%, which is only average. Naturally, this is a very volatile slot, so watching your budget is an absolute must. With small bets you can go a long way, though you’re locked into that small bet when you unlock the 4th row.
There’s much to like about this slot and graphically it definitely impresses. Collecting maps, watching the little monkey and in particular the battle spins are really well done. The slot won’t leave you bored. The only thing that bothered us was that the extra wilds didn’t really make an appearance after we unlocked the 4th row. In the prequel, we had the feeling that the extra wilds showed up more frequently, making wins seem more likely. But here? Often, we barely remembered that extra wilds had even been added to the reels, which was quite disappointing.
Still, the slot is absolutely playable, especially if you keep your bet size manageable.
