Dragon’s Fire Megaways Slot Review
Dragon’s Fire Megaways is a video slot from Red Tiger with 6 reels and up to 117,649 ways to win. Released in September 2019, this game can be played at online casinos such as Dunder, Mr Green or PlayOjo.
Theme and basic information
Dragon’s Fire Megaways is almost exactly the same as the first instalment Dragon’s Fire by Red Tiger. Except now we get a bigger reel set and the dragon drapes himself across the reels facing the other way, meaning his head is now right not left. But most elements in the game and the look of it are very similar.
We loved the look of the first game and the quality of the Megaways version is just as high. The dragon remains stunning and the slot is just really cool to look at.
With the Megaways engine (licensed through Big Time Gaming), we get 6 reels and ever-changing rows that can give us varying paylines on each spin. Sometimes we get 864 paylines, other time 28,976.
Naturally, payouts are much smaller in this game than in the predecessor. The dragon’s eye remains the most valuable symbol, paying 50x our bet for 6 on a payline. The four little dragons holding their treasures, are worth between 1.6x and 5x our bet for 6 on a payline. We also get four dragon’s eggs corresponding to the four dragons in colour as the low-value symbol.
You can play this game from 0.10 per spin to 10.00 per spin. As usual, however, this may vary depending on where you are playing.
Increasing multipliers and added wilds
The features in the base game are also the same we already know. With every winning combination, the red egg on the right-hand side starts showing a 2x multiplier that will be applied to the next consecutive win and climbs by 1x step with every consecutive win that follows. If you lose, the multiplier is reset until the next winning spin.
Of course, the massive eye of the dragon can appear here as well and increase the multiplier randomly before a winning spin is paid out. The eye can increase the multiplier by up to 10x every time it shows up. The overall maximum multiplier you could get is 50x.
Also, when the dragon moves above the reels, he will breathe fire onto 1 to 5 reels and leave behind either wild symbols or free spin symbols. Whilst the dragon usually left behind whole reels of wilds in the predecessor, here reels are rarely stacked with wilds.
Free spins with avalanche wins and more multipliers
You need three scatters on the reels to trigger the free spins. Those either land during the base game or the dragon helps add them, which is the case more often than not. Either way, three golden dragon emblems show up and you get to pick one of them, revealing the number of free spins you will play. We seen as little as 6 free spins and as many as 17.
During the free spins, the avalanche feature is added to the reels. Winning combinations now disappear off the reels and new symbols fall in from above, hopefully creating more wins. The multiplier on the right keeps increasing with each win and if you had an active multiplier whilst triggering the free spins, that will be your starting multiplier.
Of course, the eye of the dragon can show up to increase the multiplier during the free spins as well and it is possible to retrigger the free spins as the dragon will once again breathe wilds or free spin symbols onto the reels. If you only get 6 free spins, however, don’t expect to see much of that.
The good thing is, the multiplier won’t reset on a losing spin and only keep climbing.
Conclusion: Is it better than the original?
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Dragon’s Fire Megaways is 95.72%, which is disappointingly low and less than the original Dragon’s Fire slot offers. In fact, this slot is still highly volatile and offering a lower RTP could be a deal breaker for some. Payouts are smaller as well, even though it sometimes feels as if you are winning more often than in the original game.
We basically played both games side by side to figure out which one we preferred. In the end, we have to admit that the original won out because it simply had bigger payouts more often. The maximum payout for both games is 10,000x our stake, but it seems more difficult to get there with the Megaways version of the slot.
We did prefer the free spin feature in this new game because of the added avalanche feature, which is just about the only true advantage this game has over the original. It’s a bit of a pity as the potential this game could have had seems a little wasted.
