Divine Showdown Slot Review

Released in December 2019, this game can be played at online casinos such as PlayOjoMaria Casino or Rizk.

Theme and general information

Divine Showdown comes with a mythological theme that doesn’t just focus on one pantheon of gods. This makes is a lot more interesting than many other slots that showcase various gods. The scene is set in a massive arena, there are high towers in the background and the gigantic swords stuck into the mountain sides give us an impression of the epic battleground we are in.

Also, a river of lava is flowing from the middle tower, which looks impressive but is only seen in the opening scene before the reels show up.

The background music is surprisingly mellow in the base game, as if a string quartet is playing along to the spinning of the reels.

The gods battling it out here are Thor, Athena, Anubis and Wukong, covering Norse, Greek, Egyptian and Asian mythologies. It all looks pretty great. Each of the gods get a symbol on the reels. There is a wild, which looks like a gold emblem and a battle icon is the scatter. The low value symbols are our typical playing card symbols from 10 to A. Play’n GO could have been a little more imaginative here, but otherwise we do get a great-looking slot.

The wild is the most valuable symbol, paying out 20x our stake for 5 on a payline. Thor follows with 16x our stake for such a win. Athena is worth 12x our stake for 5 of her kind, and Anubis and Wukong each pay out 8x our stake for such a combination.

You can play this game from 0.20 to 100.00 per spin.

Random appearances by the Gods in the base game

For once, we get a bit of action in the base game of a Play’n GO slot and it’s not all just about the free spins. You can look forward to each god making a random appearance with their particular feature:

  • Power of Thor – turns all gods into Thor
  • Power of Athena – synchronises three reels
  • Power of Anubis – turns all instances of 1 or 2 random symbols on the reels wild
  • Power of Wukong – gives us 1 or 2 wild reels

Admittedly, we preferred to see Anubis, but good wins can be had with all four features, which don’t show up often, but not so infrequently that you hardly know they are a thing.

Pay also attention to the multiplier that can randomly be added in a little window above the reels. It opens every once in a while, and a little reel spins along, settling on the potential multiplier you could get on your next win. A multiplier of up to 10x is possible.

A Showdown of Features in the free spins

You need three scatters to launch the free spins. Then you pick which god should be your champion based on their feature. The god you chose will take up position on the left-hand side of the reels and a battle reel will show up. If it lands on the spin symbol, we simply get a free spin with the features of our chosen god.

But it can also land on any of the other three gods and then the battle takes place.

Both gods now face each other, and their respective power symbols start dropping down on three reels and in three rows. The god with the most power symbols in each row gets to strike. Whoever strikes more will win this battle. If our champion loses, he will also lose a life (we get three lives, which are shown above the god). In that case, the feature of the winning god will be active on the next spin.

If our god wins, their feature is played and either way, we continue to the battle reel once more to find out who we battle next or if we simply get another spin with our champion.

Now, there’s no set number of free spins. As long as our chosen god still has a life, we get to keep spinning. Only after we lose the last life and the opposing god gives us one last feature spin, do the free spins end.

Conclusion: A truly epic slot from Play’n GO that can yield good wins

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Divine Showdown is 96.51% at it’s best, but casinos can lower it to 94.5% and even less, which is not great. Play’n GO should really get rid of that option. There, we said it.

In any case, Divine Showdown is a great-looking slot with some epic gameplay in the free spins. The gods look good and have some worthwhile features. Even their random appearances manage to yield decent wins. And we can get up to 5,000x our stake, if we are lucky and get the right multiplier.

Whilst the volatility in this slot is very high, we absolutely enjoyed playing this game and managed to reel in enough regular wins to keep going. You should budget carefully, of course, but with a little luck you can keep playing for some time. We managed to trigger the free spins about once every 100 spins, which is a decent hit rate. Whilst we rarely won more than 60x to 80x our stake, it was still good fun and more is absolutely possible here.
