Theme and general information

Creepy slots set in the Victorian Era are a surprising favourite among online slot developers. We’ve seen a few of those, among them Dark Matters, for instance. Mysterious is one of the best-looking slots Pragmatic Play has released in recent months. We’ve often accused them of developing generic-looking slots at best, but with Mysterious they show just what they are capable of.

We’re in a town, night has fallen, fog is creeping through the streets, a storm with lightning is brewing in the distance and the forbidding manor is looming on the hill. The slot is very atmospheric and suitably spooky. The soundtrack adds its part to this, giving us an overall awesomely dark experience, even though it’s not super scary.

Three ghosts are visible on the left-hand side and the reels are adorned by classic card suit symbols as well as doorknockers as you may find them on the doors of Victorian mansions. The rings through their noses, snouts or beaks are dead giveaways, by the way. In any case, they are shaped after a lion, ox, ram and an owl.

The Mysterious logo is the most valuable symbol, paying out 25x our stake for 6 of a kind (only in the free spins) and 5x our stake in the base game. The doorknockers all pay out between 1x and 2.5x our stake in the base game for 4 of a kind and between 3x and 10x our stake in the free spins.

Three base game wild modifiers

In the base game, we see the Lord, the Lady and the Baron as ghosts on the left-hand side. One of them is always highlighted, meaning their feature is active and can be triggered whenever a wild lands or becomes part of a win (both is possible depending on the active feature). All three symbols land as wilds on the reels and trigger the following:

The Lord – When the Lord wild lands and becomes part of a winning combination it will reveal a random multiplier of 2x or 3x. If several become part of the same win, they multiply with each other. This wild only lands on reels 2, 3 and 4 in the base game.

The Lady – Whether the Lady is part of a win or not (which is first paid out in any case), she will expand across the entire reel she landed on and act as a mystery symbol, revealing a random reel symbol to potentially form further wins. She can also turn into a stack of wilds. She only lands on reels 2, 3 and 4 as well.

The Baron – This is also called the infectious wild. When the Baron wild can become part of a win, all instances of the wild on the reel will expand vertically to cover neighbouring symbols (at least 1 and possibly the whole stack), turning them wild as well. Once again, this wild also only lands on reels 2, 3 and 4.

When playing Mysterious, we found the Baron wild to be the most effective to return wins.

Choose your free spin feature

Landing three or four scatters will trigger 8 or 12 free spins. Before the free spins are started, we actually get to choose which feature we would like to play.

Locking Multiplier Free Spins: Watch out for the clock that lands on reels 1 and 6 during this feature. One of them on the reels may award a random multiplier of 3x, 6x, 9x or 12x, if a win occurs. If you get two clocks (one on reel 1 and one on reel 6), one of those multipliers is randomly locked in for three more spins, which are played out immediately.

Resurrecting Roaming Wilds Free Spins: This mouthful of a free spin feature holds any wilds that appear on the reels during the free spins on the reels, where they hover around and land in a potential position until all reels come to a stop. If another wild lands on the reels, all the hovering wilds will solidify and pay out any wins they are part of. If no other wild lands on the reels, the wilds will not solidify. However, they are still there and will continue to hover around and land on new positions during the next spin.

Verdict: A great-looking slot with interesting features that require patience

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Mysterious is 96.5%, which is excellent, even though this is a highly volatile slot. And trust us, you’ll feel the volatility. Especially when you play in Turbo Mode and the spins keep clicking away, you’ll notice how you may end up playing 20 spins without a single win. So, budget carefully because this game is worth being patient for.

For starters, the Mysterious online slot looks great and is well-crafted in every detail. Plus, the features are great as well and neither base game nor free spins ever get boring. You’ll end up trying both free spin features several times.

As it is, the first time around (where we easily played 1,000 spins), the free spins especially ended up being very frustrating as they hardly yielded any wins. The wild features in the base game were the only thing that kept us going. But since we liked the slot, we gave it another go, and our resilience paid off.
