Theme and general information

The Wolf’s Bane was released just in time for Halloween and as such comes with a werewolf theme. There aren’t that many werewolf slots out there and most of them aren’t that great. In terms of looks, The Wolf’s Bane at least manages to stand out.

We seem to be in a 18^th or perhaps 19^th century village. The last leaves have fallen, the full moon is rising above the village and its surrounding rather barren landscape. Swathes of fog move through the scene and the soundtrack and howling sounds add to the overall atmosphere. We’d rather be inside by a fireplace than wander through this scene.

On the reels floating above the background, we find a soldier, a nurse, an old lady and a gravedigger. The wild is a young man about to turn into a werewolf. The scatter is the full moon, which is hardly surprising. Finally, there are low value card symbols from J to A that are smeared with blood.

The wild is worth 50x our stake for 5 of a kind. The wounded soldier is also worth 50x for 5 on a payline. The old woman pays 30x our stake for such a win. The nurse and the gravedigger each pay 20x our stake for 5 on a payline.

A simple Pick-me bonus

There is only one feature of note in the base game and it seems to make such a rare appearance that we didn’t even notice it at first. If you pay close attention, you’ll see a guy with a crossbow who only lands on reels 1, 3 and 5. The word ‘bonus’ is written on the symbol and when he does land on all three reels at once, you get to pick one of the three symbols. That will then reveal a coin prize between 5x and 50x your stake.

And that’s it. Nothing more to it and nothing else that is special about the base game. Playing at least 800 spins, we probably triggered the bonus twice and it took forever before we triggered it the first time.

Free spins with four different wild features

The free spins are less difficult to come by. At least three scatters across the reels will get us 10 free spins. Four scatters will activate 20 free spins and five scatters will activate 30 free spins.

Before the free spins are started, we are looking at the Wild Board. Here four types of wilds are displayed, and they are highlighted in succession. Hitting the stop button will slow the light down until it eventually stops on one of the four feature options:

We achieved the best results with the Spreading and the Expanding Wilds. However, you never know what you get as the feature is added randomly, which is a shame. That way you could end up playing only with the Regular Wilds or only Expanding Wilds and never see the other options. It’s not exactly a balanced mix either, but mostly we got between 30x and 100x our stake with either feature.

Conclusion: A solid slot with a good horror theme

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of The Wolf’s Bane is 96.74%, which is great value, especially for a slot of low to medium volatility. The slot comes with a spooky atmosphere which is a lot of fun. The features add nothing new, however, and aren’t overly exciting or even worthwhile. We don’t mind the different wild options but would have preferred a less random way of picking them.

The Wolf’s Bane provides some simple fun and a relatively simple game play.
