About Playtech

Some of the big casino software developers a story, some don’t. Playtech’s is one worth knowing. For instance, few would guess that the company was originally founded in Tartu, Estonia, back in 1999. Nowadays the company is at home in the Isle of Man, but that was not always the case.

Teddy Sagi and a group of industry professionals were originally behind Playtech and in 2001 they received their first online gambling license. They began developing a range of online casino products and in 2002 the first Playtech powered casino opened its virtual doors. The company produced more than just slots and casino table games, however. They also developed bingo games and other lottery solutions, are behind the famous iPoker network and ventured into the sportsbetting market as well. They were also among the first to develop live games.

In 2006 the company was traded on the London Stock Exchange, already valued at a staggering £550 million.  Ever since then and under the motto of “Source of Success”, Playtech has followed a strategy of expansion, acquiring more and more subsidiaries such as Mobenga, GTS, Videobet, Geneity, Intelligent Gaming, Ash Gaming and Quickspin.

All these acquisitions were strategic, strengthening Playtech’s position in certain markets or with particular products such as bingo, sportsbetting or mobile development.

Nowadays Playtech, who has hit very few snags in its history, employs over 3,500 people in over 13 countries and has made more than 500 games.

Playtech Games

Our focus is, of course, on casino games, though Playtech does have to offer much more than that. But we’ll get to that later. Playtech casinos will always have a dedicated section to their games. A lot of online casinos these days offer games from more than one provider, including Playtech casinos. But if they started out as casinos only offering Playtech games, you’ll find that the games from other casinos will be housed in a different section at the casino. A good example here is bet365.

Since many online casinos relied on Playtech as their sole game provider, you can expect a full range of games from the developer, including slots, table games, video poker and other games. There are over 500 available at the moment and Playtech regularly releases new games.

Slots

Playtech’s slots cover all kinds of themes. They are known to be reliable games, fair and with solid gameplay. Older games feel somewhat dated and even with new releases you sometimes wonder if Playtech are catching up to the competition. But keep in mind that they had the good sense to buy Quickspin, which is a fairly new developer, who knows all about innovative gameplay and excellent game design.

Playtech’s portfolio of slots include such games as: American Dad, Space Invaders, Jekyll & Hyde, Halloween Fortune, Little Britain, The Mummy or Haunted House. Playtech is very well known for their licensed slots, of which they have quite a number.

Table Games

Playtech also offers a decent range of card and table games. There are various versions of Roulette, Baccarat, Blackjack and Casino Poker such as Tequila Poker or Casino Hold’em available. They’ve also made a Craps version.

Video Poker and other games

Any developer who aims to offer more than slots and table games will also include video poker. Playtech supplies quite a number of those games, among then 10s or Better, 4-line Deuces Wild, Joker Poker or Deuces Wild.

Additionally you’ll find Keno and skill-based or sports games to play that are quite unique to Playtech’s portfolio and should be checked out, if you’re looking for a bit of a diversion from slots or table games.

Playtech’s Progressive Jackpots

Progressive jackpots are certainly one of Playtech’s biggest strengths. Once upon a time the Marvel suite games were all linked to a jackpot. But since losing the Marvel license after Disney bought Marvel and ended the licensing agreement not just with Playtech but also with Cryptologic, the company was forced to come up with something new.

Thus the Age of the Gods slots were born in 2016. These games are also all linked to one and the same progressive jackpot and they come with a theme of Ancient Greek mythology, offering the same gameplay and mechanics as the Marvel slots, but preventing any licensing issues by using the un-copyrighted heroes of old.

Some of Playtech’s jackpots easily grow into seven-figure sums, but many also still offer very solid six-figure wins:

  • Jackpot Giant
  • Beach Life
  • Gladiator Jackpot
  • Age of the Gods slots
  • Leprechaun’s Luck
  • Deal or No Deal World Slot
  • Funky Fruits

Live Games

Playtech was one of the first casino software developers to venture into the live casino section. Back in the day the technology wasn’t quite up to it yet, so the company struggled and ultimately had to surrender the market lead to the competition, who joined in the game later and came much better equipped.

Still, to this day Playtech offers state of the art live studios, ensuring that customers only get the best. They just don’t get the same range or selection of games that the competition offers. You can count on being able to play Roulette, Baccarat, Blackjack, Casino Poker and even Sic Bo as live versions, however, and that’s definitely enough for most players.

iPoker

Perhaps the focus on live tables is simply not as strong, because Playtech also has to look after one of the largest Poker networks in the world. The iPoker network connects some of the biggest and best casinos in the world and is home to thousands of players at any given time.

This is truly a product Playtech can be proud of and there are very few online casinos powered by Playtech that don’t offer their iPoker network.

Other Products

Bingo, lottery and social gaming are among the other products that Playtech offers. Many of their online casinos will offer some of their other products, rarely all of them.

Via their subsidiary Geneity Playtech also offers sportsbetting solutions, which are very popular at their online casinos and bookmakers.

Playtech is one of the very few online casinos suppliers, who offer just about any product a bookmaker or online casino could be after, making them a true one-stop-shop.

Playing Mobile

In 2010 Playtech acquired Mobenga, a mobile gaming provider. Clearly Playtech was ahead of the game with such an early acquisition, though they only really started producing games for mobile platforms in 2012. Using the HTML5 platform, Playtech’s favourite titles are now all available for mobile play.

Additionally Playtech developed a dedicated app especially for Playtech-run casinos that will offer access to their platform and games on mobile devices. Indeed, they’ve put a lot of effort into their app, which was released a few months ago and which offers a fantastic mobile experience to customers.

Safety and security

Compliance, licensing, testing and responsible gaming are all big topics for Playtech. You can’t even access their company’s website without first verifying your age.

All of Playtech’s games are regularly tested, for instance by TST, to ensure randomness and fairness. The company holds licenses from Alderney, the UKGC and Italy.

They provide very transparent and extensive information on fraud prevention, responsible gambling, licensing and player protection.

And if you know Playtech casinos, you know that almost all of them have an excellent reputation when it comes to safety and security. Player protection is usually not an issue and many Playtech casinos have been around for a long time, making them reliable options.
