Boston Files to Prevent Wynn Casino Build

On September 30, 2015, Boston.com reported that Boston has filed a motion to prevent Wynn Resorts from building a casino. Wynn Resorts wants to build a casino in Everett to the tune of $1.7 billion. The motion against Wynn Resorts was filed on Monday. The City of Boston is asking for the Suffolk Superior Court to invalidate approval given last month by the state, regarding environmental impact. Wynn Resorts has begun site and planning work. Wynn Resorts has a piece of land along the Mystic River and hopes to break ground on the project in 2016.

The court filing from the City of Boston states the casino would impact Sullivan Square traffic. The Sullivan Square is in Charlestown, the neighbourhood next to the site. The city document further cited their plans to build streets to help with traffic flow. The document states the casino would be incompatible with this street planning.

The document is 41 pages in length. Allegedly it also contains a complaint regarding the Massachusetts Gaming Commission with regards to the license they have issues to Wynn Resorts. The City believes the license should not be granted when there is an issue with Sullivan Square.

Allegedly the plan for Wynn Resorts new casino will require the use of MBTA land that would be used to access the casino. It would have an impact on transport operations and the environment.

This new document is in addition to the suit already in place against the gaming commission from 2014. The original motion was against giving win the sole license to the region. Last week the case was heard, with a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. The Judge in the original case is now reviewing the arguments made in court last week and will take the information under consideration. It is not known when a decision on the licensing issue will be made.
