MGM Attempts to Expand into Atlanta

Georgia is the next state at least one casino conglomerate is looking to expand, according to a July 20, 2015 post. MGM wants to build a $1 billion casino resort in the heart of downtown Atlanta. There are several things blocking their path right now, including Georgia gambling laws that prohibit gambling establishments. However, there may be one strategy that will get the law changed.

Supporters who want a casino in Atlanta, Georgia are hoping to convince lawmakers to change the Georgia gambling laws to allow for at least one casino. A recent legal battle to allow stores to sell liquor on Sundays was based after the community supported it. The casino supporters are hoping if they give the final say to Atlanta residents, the lawmakers will have to change the current gambling restrictions.

One thing needed to change the laws is a two-thirds majority from legislative members in congress and the senate. A constitutional amendment has to allow gambling and a vote has to be posed to residents.

The law also has to get passed Governor Nathan Deal. It would need to be legislation that is transparent and ensures there are numerous benefits to letting a casino into Atlanta. Main concerns with regards to new amendments are often the impact on people and issues with gambling addiction. Those who do not support gambling will fall back on gambling issues, while those in support will outline the economical benefits and job potentials a casino would bring.

MGM is also trying their best to convince Georgia lawmakers. They have discussed the benefits of allowing a casino, as it would help revive Georgia’s lottery-funded program called the Hope Scholarship. The rewards have had to be cut due to an economical downturn. With a casino and the taxes paid to the city and state, issues with economical funding could be solved, according to supporters.
