Employees Worried with Grosvenor Casino Closure

An unofficial announcement was made Wednesday, June 24, 2015 regarding Grosvenor Casino in Southsea, Portsmouth. The casino is an iconic structure located on Osborne Road. Historically significant, the casino has operated for several decades providing UK residents with a place to enjoy favourite table games, poker, and slot machines. The News reported the casino is going to shut down on August 9, 2015. The casino closure will put 50 employees out of their employment.

The announcement to media came from an unidentified employee. This employee felt let down; especially, because the casino is making a profit. Cutting overhead to save on any struggles, without losing business would have been a better option in this person’s opinion. The employee admitted the casino is paying a week’s pay for each full year an employee has worked at the casino, but only up to 10 years.

All employees are given a chance to apply for available positions, at the company’s other casino in Gunwharf Quay. The employee feels too old to apply for a new job or to work for minimum wage again. Disappointment was apparent during the interview when the employee stated the company talked about teamwork and loyalty only to cut 50 jobs and close down the entire operation by August 9.

Councillor Hugh Mason regrets any business closure occurring in his Southsea area. The casino and restaurant brought revenue to Southsea, as well as jobs.

Councillor Linda Symes believes the closure is unfortunate and worries about the historic building. She does not want to see the building torn down. It has been used for weddings, prestigious dinners, and ballroom dancing in the past. It is a place filled with cultural heritage that she feels will be lost if it is demolished. There is also concern over the cost to convert the casino into a different business.

For employees facing job loss due to the initial downsizing and eventual closure, Adrian Baker from GMB Union is on hand to help.
