Tohono O’odham Nation Faces Opposition for Casino

West Valley, Arizona’s The Republic released information about a lawsuit opened in June 22, 2015 against Arizona state officials. On Monday, June 29, 2015, news was released stating according to the recent conflict state officials are trying to prevent the casino from opening towards the end of 2015. The Arizona Department of Gaming has not approved certification for the casino citing fraud. The gaming department believes the tribe committed fraud during state gaming compact negotiations held in 2002. According to the department, the tribe did not provide transparency regarding their casino plans for West Valley.

The tribe made an announcement for a new casino in 2009. The Tohono O’odham Nation has won other lawsuits since 2009 with regards to the fraud matter. The verdict is always that they are operating within the law.

The law expert working with ADG recommended the gaming commission not stop the casino from opening based on the Federal Law and Federal District Court ruling. Both law and ruling state Tohono O’odham nation has a project that fits under the compact. The tribe filed suit to request the ADG stop its threats to their employees and certified gaming vendors.

Glendale City council members and other cities have written to the Governor of Arizona asking for a meeting about the issue. They would like the AZ Governor to come to West Valley and see the project that is already being built. They hope the Governor can provide insights.

Most of the cities are in favor of the casino because of the jobs it will create. It will provide over 1,000 jobs to community residents and offer a positive economic impact. The local casino will help increase tourism to the West Valley area too.

One person in opposition is Litchfield Park Mayor; Thomas Schoaf who says the tribe broke a promise by using the land as a casino location.
