Ankh of Anubis Slot Review
Released in December 2019, this game can be played at online casinos such as Maria Casino, Kaboo or CasinoCruise.
Theme and general information
If Play’n GO has a favourite theme, it’s clearly Ancient Egypt. They may very well have more Egyptian themed slots than any other developer. Unfortunately, their line-up is not always original. In some cases, they even managed to recycle themselves.
But with Ankh of Anubis they managed to develop a slot that does manage to stand out from the crowd. In fact, given the background scenery, we are not actually in Ancient Egypt. We’re not even on Earth. A massive planet, looking very much like Saturn, is visible in the sky. The Egyptian inspired architecture, buildings and pyramids are not in ruins but very much in use and somewhat alien looking. If you pay close attention, you see a sort of space craft flying across the sky.
There is a river in the foreground and boats are sailing on it. Whilst the graphics are classic Play’n GO, the slot looks good and the theme is interesting.
On the reels, we find a brooch, a bracelet, a scarab and an Ankh. The latter is the most valuable regular symbol, worth 5x our stake for 5 of its kind. The other three high value symbols pay out 1.5x to 2.5x our stake for such a win. The remaining low value symbols are playing card symbols from J to A.
The god of the underworld, Anubis, is the wild in this game and 5 of him pay out 10x our stake.
Unusual in this slot is also the reel layout. We reels across 3x4x4x4x3 rows, which gives us 576 ways to win.
You can play this game from 0.10 to 100.00 per spin.
Random Anubis Wilds
In the base game, Anubis can randomly activate his power and add further wilds to the reels, even creating a stacked wild up to 4 symbols high. It’s a good opportunity in the base game for some decent wins.
It’s also the only real base game feature that keeps things interesting here and there.
Collect Ankh symbols in the free spins for added wilds
The scatter in this game is a glowing pyramid. Three scatters will give us 10 free spins. Four or five scatters would trigger 15 or 20 free spins, respectively. The main aim now is to collect as many of the Ankh symbols as possible. When five Ankhs are collected (which is shown in the meter above the reels), the Anubis feature will be triggered, and wilds are randomly added to the reels.
Additionally, three or more scatters will add 5 or more free spins, which can be re-triggered indefinitely. Since Ankh symbols are collected regularly, you’d also activate the Anubis feature regularly. With unlimited free spins, provided you keep retriggering the free spins, awesome wins are possible here.
Conclusion: An entertaining Play’n GO slot with high potential
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Ankh of Anubis is 96.2%, which is pretty good. However, online casinos can choose to lower that to as little as 94.2%, which is pretty bad. It’s one of our least favourite things about Play’n GO slots.
Still, this is one Play’n GO game that doesn’t have the highest possible volatility, so wins don’t seem as elusive as in other slots. Plus, Ankh of Anubis is the slot with the highest possible potential that Play’n GO has released to day, offering up a potential 15,000x our stake. As such, players who love slots that can pay out big will certainly be interested in Ankh of Anubis. It’s not a feature heavy game, it looks great and it has a big potential.
We’ll see if this game manages to keep its promise.
