Gem Rocks Slot Review
Gem Rocks is a video slot from Yggdrasil Gaming with a set of 6×4 reels and 4,096 ways to win. That means, any three matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right will yield a winning combination. Gem Rocks was originally released in February 2018 and can be played at online casinos such as PlayOjo, Guts or Cashmio.
Theme and basic information
Gem Rocks comes with a theme of gems and rocks. Quite literally. We’re looking at a rocky landscape, the symbols on the reels look like gems embedded into rocks and the rocky troll-like creatures that make an appearance as part of the bonus feature, are adorned with gems as well.
It’s beautifully executed and looks just great, as all Yggdrasil Gaming slots do. The background music is somewhat dark and gloomy, almost foreboding. But it fits very well to the look of the slot.
We get four different symbols, but only one of them (the red rock with the star) is worth anything. You can get 200 coins for a 6-of-a-kind win here. All other symbols are worth between 20 and 35 coins for such a winning combination.
Basic gameplay
Once again, Yggdrasil keeps things simple, though this one can look a little more complicated than you might expect. In any case, there’s no bonus game or free spins to be had here and no wilds can be found anywhere either.
You can play this slot from £0.10 to £50, which is not a bad range and should help you with your budget, because this game can be quite volatile.
As already mentioned, you get 4,096 ways to win thanks to the size of the reels. And the slot comes with the Dropdown feature, which is essentially an avalanche feature. Any symbols part of a winning combination will explode and make room for new symbols falling in from above, hopefully giving you consecutive wins and unlocking the Mega Symbols.
Bonus feature
The Mega Symbols are not to be mistaken for the 2×2 symbols occasionally appearing on the reels anyway. They can be part of a winning combination, but they are pretty random and don’t add much to your chances at winning more.
The main feature is the Gem Rock feature, which are activated after several consecutive wins:
- 2 consecutive wins: get a 2×2 gem rock monster on the reels
- 5 consecutive wins: get a 3×3 gem rock monster on the reels
- 9 consecutive wins: get a 4×4 gem rock monster on the reels
We’ve managed to get up to six consecutive wins before we were set back once more and getting two consecutive wins is happening often enough to keep you going. But getting decent wins here will require a lot of patience and a good budget.
Conclusion: A volatile slot that can be a lot of fun
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Gem Rocks is 96.2%. That’s just about average and given how volatile this game can be, you’ll feel it. Wins are few and far, which is almost surprising, because we do get 4,096 ways to win. If you want to get anywhere with this slot, you will have to budget carefully. It’s almost better not to switch on autoplay, because that’ll just drain your funds in no time.
Still, Gem Rocks is a cool slot and worth trying out, especially if you like a bit of a challenge. But be warned, your wallet might not be grateful in the end!
