Ancient Greece and the Greek Pantheon are also favourites among slot themes. The mightiest of gods was, of course, Zeus himself. He is at the centre of Zeus Lightning. The game is well-crafted and shows us what Red Tiger has to offer when it comes to the visuals. Sometimes they don’t quite wow us, but in this case crisp graphics, rich details and plenty of gold make for a visually compelling game.

The stage is set on the top of Mount Olympus and thunder rumbles among the dark clouds in the distance. Lightning lights up the frame of the reels. It’s quite cool, actually.

On the reels we get card suit symbols that seem to have been decorated in an Art Deco style. The details is awesome. The high value symbols look like masks or perhaps stone reliefs showing us a cobra, a bear, an eagle, a ram and a Pan. The latter is worth the most and pays for two of his kind already. For 7 of his kind on a payline we get 150x our stake.

And speaking of paylines, whilst we need to match up 3 matching symbols along the 30 available paylines, they may be located adjacent to each other beginning on the left-most reel, the right-most reel or even in the middle. This leads to much more wins than would ordinarily be the case.

Expanding Lightning and Scatter Wins

Zeus himself is the wild symbol in this game and he comes as a 1×3 stacked symbol. Whenever he lands fully anywhere on the reels, potential wins are paid out and then he activates his lightning feature. One of the symbols on the reels is hit with lightning and then spreads across the reel to fully expand on the reels. We usually get at least two (for Pan) or three (for all other symbols) expanded reels of symbols, though more are possible.

With this feature it also doesn’t matter which of the reels are covered in expanded symbols as they will pay out regardless of whether they are adjacent to each other or not. The Zeus wild will also be added into the wins.

Free Spins with a boost

Free spins are triggered by landing three scatters anywhere on the reels. We then get three expanded wilds added to the reels, which means we could land potentially all three of them.

During the free spins, the Expanding Lightning feature is, of course, active. Verdict: A solid slot with regular wins but hardly worthy of the gods

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Zeus Lightning Power Reels is 97.73%, which is excellent. It’s significantly more than we’ve seen from Red Tiger in a long time and perhaps a reaction to the fact that previous Power Reels slots were subpar in this area. Of course, Zeus Lightning also comes with maximum volatility, so careful budgeting is a good idea regardless.

Beyond that, Zeus Lightning is well-designed and looks great. It’s one of the more epic slots out there, but you would expect nothing less of Zeus, King of the Gods. The Expanding Lightning feature ends up being this game’s saving grace as nothing much would happen without it. We have seen it often enough, which helped our budget. Frequently bigger wins between 20x and 40x our stake were possible.

But triggering the free spins proved to be rather difficult. On average we played about 1,000 spins to get the free spins twice. If it weren’t for the Expanding Lightning, we would have had to abandon this one as unplayable. As it was, the gameplay felt solid and regular wins are possible. The maximum potential here is 5,000x our stake. Not worthy of the gods but still okay.
