Theme and general information

Win-A-Beest is actually a reasonably clever take on the wildebeest, which takes centre stage in this slot featuring the animals of the African Savannah. Usually, we get rhinos, lions, elephants or buffalos who feature in slots with such a theme most prominently. There’s any number of slots out there about these animals. The wildebeest is a first.

That doesn’t mean Play’n GO has given any less than they would have for a lion. We get the lovely-drawn plains of Africa in the background and grim-looking animals on the reels. Seriously, these beasts are not to trifled with.

Colourful, wooden card symbols from J to A aside, we encounter leopard, rhino, lion and elephant on the reels. They’re all between 2x and 2.5x our stake worth for a win of 5 on a payline. The wildebeest itself is the highest value symbol, however, paying 5x our stake for such a win. Whilst that may not seem like a lot, we do get wilds and a 2x multiplier wild as well, which expands further on the values of the symbols.

In the base game, the slot is played with 256 ways to win across the 5 reels with a setup of 2x4x4x4x2 symbols. That’s a bit unusual, but the corner symbols will be unlocked during the features, which then gives us 1,024 ways to win.

Beest Mode Feature and Beest Mode Spins

The Beest Mode is the main feature to look out for in this game. It can randomly trigger throughout (always with a shout of “Beest Mode”) and will expand the reels fully. More importantly, during Beest Mode, only wilds, multiplier wilds, scatters and the wildebeest can land on the reels. This not only increases the chance for big wins but also to trigger the Beest Mode Spins.

We need 3, 4 or 5 scatters for that to happen and get 4, 6 or 8 Beest Mode Spins during which the Beest Mode continues to be active on every spin. So, we only get the two wilds, scatters and wildebeests on the reels. That also means it’s theoretically possible to re-trigger the feature indefinitely as long as we keep getting enough scatters.

Stampeding Spins

There are more generic free spins to be won as well in Win-A-Beest. Landing 3, 4 or 5 scatters during the base game will give us 8, 12 or 20 free spins. These are played out on the full 5×4 grid with 1,024 ways to win.

The Beest Mode Feature can still be triggered now and from within the Beest Mode it is also possible to trigger the Beest Mode spins, which would play out before the game resumes the normal Stampeding Spins.

Again, it is possible to retrigger the feature indefinitely.

Verdict: A surprisingly entertaining slot with solid features and great potential

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Win-A-Beest is 96.12%, which is solid especially for such a slot that comes with just medium volatility. That’s a rare thing in Play’n GO’s portfolio to encounter and whilst the Stampeding Spins make only infrequent appearances, the Beest Mode shows up regularly.

And that is what makes the slot more entertaining than we would have initially suspected. The Beest Mode doesn’t always yield great results. But it keeps on coming and sometimes it is very giving indeed. We scored over 100x our bet more than once, which was always pleasant and more than we got during the regular free spins.
