Theme and basic information

Wild Rails takes us to the golden age of train travel at the turn of the 20th century, when it was still very elegant. Visually, the slot reminds us of Yggdrasil’s Cazino Zeppelin or Orient Express. The style is very similar here, though we don’t get a steampunk theme in Wild Rails.

Graphically, the slot is beautifully done, and the setup is more unusual that in most other games. Instead of having the reels spin vertically, the trains with the symbols on it run horizontally. The paylines are still lined up in the old-fashioned way we know, however. But where the theme is concerned, the choice to spin the reels horizontally is inspired. It does look as if trains are running along the tracks above a gorge between two mountains. The scene is stunning in the background.

The four main passengers on the train are the high-value symbols. The lady with the fan pays out 20x our stake for 5 on a payline. The wild, however, is the highest paying symbol, giving us 30x our stake for 5 on a payline. The lady with the champagne glass is worth about 14x our stake for 5 of a kind and the gentleman with the cards is still worth 10x our stake.

The playing card symbols from 10 to A are beautifully done as well. They’ve been tied to trains as well, running along the tracks.

Wild trains keep things lively in the base game

The main attraction in the base game are the wild trains. They rush along on all four train tracks and randomly land on the reels. It’s possible to get 4 wild trains in one spin and whilst the wilds are often interspersed with regular symbols, five may land on a payline at once.

These wild trains won’t show up on every spin. Since this is a highly volatile slot you may not see one for ten spins in a row. But you can also get four at a time and with that big wins. During the base game, our biggest wins were between 20x and 50x our stake.

Unlock wild trains in the free spins

You need at least 3 scatters (the golden locomotive) to activate 5 free spins. You would get 7 free spins with 4 scatters and 5 scatters would give you 10 spins. During the free spins, 1 wild train is active on every spin. But each scatter you collect will be added to your counter and for every three scatters you will not only receive +1 spin but also unlock another wild train.

If you manage to unlock all 4 wild trains, you’d get another 3 spins on top. Plus, you will keep getting +3 spins for more scatters.

Of course, it needs a lot of luck for that to happen. At the most, we played 7 free spins and unlocked two wild trains.

Conclusion: An entertaining slot that can be slow going at first

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Wild Rails is 96.53%, which is excellent value. But this is a highly volatile slot, which is what Play’n GO are famous for. As such, big wins are rare, and you are more likely to see them thanks to a bunch of wild trains in the base game than in the free spins.

Though the potential is there. However, the free spins were initially hard to come by. After our first 500 spins we gave up and came back another day. Still, it took us 500 spins again to trigger the free spins once more. Oddly, after that, we activated the free spins 4 times in less than 150 spins.

Even then, wins were never big, and we never got very far with those free spins and wild trains. In the end, only careful budgeting will get you to your destination and taking this particular train will offer beautiful and tempting vistas, but it could also drain your wallet very quickly. You’ll need patience to get going properly in Wild Rails.
