Vampire Senpai Slot Review
Released in July 2020, this game is available at online casinos such as LeoVegas, Unibet or Vera&John.
Theme and general information
Quickspin is well-known for producing unique slots with themes that don’t necessarily fit the usual fare. Enter Vampire Senpai. Yes, we get an obviously Asian theme here. But the addition of vampires is certainly unusual. And then there’s the fact that a senpai is usually a title reserved for teachers (or at least an admired elder).
So, where does that leave us with this slot? There’s a vampire in play, yes. And we get three characters that can be turned. Still, it’s not a dark or gruesome game, nor is it peopled with attractive characters in Victorian attire. The soundtrack is great, though, veering between Asian tunes and something more exiting and perhaps even a little sinister.
The scene is quite pretty instead. The sun has just set, casting everything in a orange and red glow. The reels are framed by a pagoda and we get low-value card symbols on the reels as well as three medium value characters and the high value wilds.
The three characters are charming. We have a matronly green lady. A handsome purple guy and a pink girl. They are each worth 10x our stake for 5 of a kind.
The wild is our vampire senpai, who is worth 20x our stake for five of a kind in the base game and 40x our stake during the free spins. All medium value characters can be turned wild and are worth the same in such a case.
You can play this game from 0.10 to 100.00 per spin.
Turning Wilds in the base game
The main feature in the base game is the turning of regular characters into vampire wilds. Well, they are called Turning Wilds, to be sure.
Whenever the vampire senpai shows up, he will turn any adjacent characters into wilds as well. Those will now turn further adjacent characters wild if there are any. That can lead to a nice chain reaction, but it’s not something you will see often.
More wild features in the free spins
The Reanimated Free Spins are triggered with at least three scatters (the golden bell). You get 7 free spins for three scatters, 9 free spins for four scatters and 12 free spins for five scatters.
The vampire senpai will continue to do his thing whenever he lands, turning characters into wilds. Additionally, he will remain on the reels for the duration of the free spins, merely leaping from symbol to symbol, perhaps increasing the chance to turn characters wild.
During this feature, it is also possible for Talisman Wilds to show up on reels 1 through to 4. It’s possible to get between 3 and 9 of them, and they are also sticky.
Finally, each Vampire Wild or Talisman Wild will add +1 spin to our tally.
Verdict: A well-executed slot with decent potential that lacks excitement
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Vampire Senpai is 96.19%, which is quite good, especially for a slot of medium volatility. The maximum potential win in this game is 8,800x our stake, which is definitely good as well.
Vampire Senpai is definitely a good-looking slot with a charm to it that we often find in Quickspin slots. The features are playable, especially the free spins, but overall, the game still lacks excitement.
Played on a 5×5 grid, this is still not a cluster slot, which leaves us wanting somewhat. We also only get 40 paylines on this setup, which makes this worse. We simply can’t shake the feeling that this slot could have been more than it turned out to be. It’s a shame for a slot that has everything you need to make it work.
