Theme and basic information

Whether it’s Norse mythology or the Vikings who prayed to Odin and Co, Norse slots are incredibly popular. Instead of the rough Vikings or any of the Gods, the Valkyries take centre stage in this slot. Valkyries play an important role in Norse mythology. They watch of the battle fields of mortals, deciding who will live and who will die, taking one half of the fallen to Freya and the other half to Odin, where they prepare for Ragnarok. Valkyries are usually depicted as fierce warrior women themselves, either winged or riding flying horses.

In this slot, goddess Freya stands to the left, overlooking the happenings. The Valkyries Gane, Helena, Andora and Tyrsa are depicted on the reels themselves. Additionally, we get a metal glove, a snake winding around a sword, a wolf mask and a hammer. The playing card symbols J to A are richly decorated and look somewhat runic. The beautiful wild symbol gives us one-eyed Odin himself.

The scene appears to be a battlefield, though we rise up to Valhalla during the free spins. Either way, it’s stunning, epic and comes with a glorious soundtrack that actually manages to rival the Game of Thrones soundtrack, if we may humbly submit such a notion.

The Base Game

Valkyrie is as feature-packed a slot as any that we’ve seen from ELK Studios. In fact, we get more here than with most.

In the base game, look out for the mega symbols, which can be 2×2, 2×3 or even 2×3 symbols big. They roll across the reels completely randomly and can depict all the symbols, though we’ve never seen the Wild as a mega symbol.

Beyond that, three random bonus symbols can be handed out by Freya. All of a sudden, she may get ready for some action and bonus symbols rain down on the reels. You will then get one of the following options:

• Shield of Chance: Freya raises her shield and wild symbols will rain down on the reels – mostly, you get 4 to 8 shields, though more is possible.
• Sword of Destiny: Freya raises her sword and swords will fly down reels 2, 3 and/or 4, where they may stop and turn the reel wholly wild.
• Arrows of Fortune: Freya shoots up to 3 arrows, which will create mega symbols that can cover 2×2, 2×3 or 3×3 spaces on the reels.

At first, we didn’t even know that those bonus features can show up during the base game as we only encountered the Sword of Destiny during our first round of free spins. After we played a while longer, we saw the features more frequently during the base game as well.

The Bonus Game

The free spin symbol needs to land at least three times on the reels to trigger the Valhalla free spins. Depending on how many scatters you had when activating the free spins, you get a different amount of free spins and also different amounts of guaranteed bonus spins (meaning one of the above bonuses will certainly be activated during your free spins).
