Turn Your Fortune is a video slot from NetEnt with 5 reels, 4 rows and 40 paylines. This slot was the first release by NetEnt in January 2019 and can be played at online casinos such as LeoVegas, Twin Casino or PlayOjo.
Here we get an Art Nouveau theme, which is not so much a theme as decorating style. It’s beautiful, intricate and opulent. The symbols on the reels, lion, owl, turtle, fish and shell, are beautifully decorated and look like gems with gold adorned. They’d make beautiful brooches, to be honest.
Even the playing card symbols from J to A look beautifully golden and slightly sparkly. The background music is not our favourite. It seems geared to build some tension, but that doesn’t really seem fitting. We’d have preferred something a little lighter, more orchestral.
The lion is the most valuable symbol, paying 200 coins for a 5-of-a-kind win. All other symbols follow with 60 to 120 coins for such a winning combination.
The wild is the pink butterfly and substitutes all the regular symbols and none of the special symbols, of course.
You can play this slot from €0.20 to €200.
When fortune isn’t with you in this slot, you’ll be spinning away the reels without much happening. You’ll see smaller wins more frequently than bigger wins, but the latter can show up every so often, because the symbols have a tendency to show up stacked and the higher value symbols can pay out nicely.
But if fortune is on your side, you may see the Fortune Re-Spins every 40 to 50 spins. And that can be pretty awesome. Here’s what needs to happen: two scatters need to land anywhere on reels 1, 3 or 5 in combination with a winning payline. So, if you get two scatters on the reels but no win beyond that, you won’t trigger the feature.
It’s a bit random and can be frustrating, but when you do trigger the feature, it’s always a nice bonus. During the feature, one symbol is chosen (usually the one that was part of the winning combination) and it will become a collectable symbol. It’s now the only symbol appearing on the reels, besides a key, which can ‘turn your fortune’ up to the next level and increase your final win.
You need 5 of the collectable symbols to climb the ladder and increase your wins. The re-spins end when you’ve either collected a screen full of those symbols or no further matching symbols land on the reels in one spin. You can end up with 50x your bet on average in this feature.
In principle, the actual free spin bonus works in the same way as the fortune re-spins, but you get more advantages. The free spins are triggered when you land a scatter on reels 1, 3 and 5. Then you’ll be taken to a wheel of fortune that starts spinning. You have to press ‘stop’ and it is determined how many spins you’ll get (on the outer segment), which symbol will be collectable (on the middle segment) and if you get a key (or even two) to unlock another level before you even started.
For every 20 of the collectable symbols, you’ll climb up a step on the fortune ladder. A key, which can also be collected, will turn the reels to increase the overall wins. There are also special +10 symbols of your collectable symbol that will add +10 to your counter right away. Oh, and random +1 free spins are also added whilst your spinning away.
The levels for the wins look as follows:
And these are the wins that will be added to the normal payline wins that you get during the free spins anyway. We managed to get 120x to 150x our stake back when we played the free spins various times.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Turn Your Fortune is 96.24%, which is good but not great. When you manage to turn your fortune in your favour, you will always feel like a winner in this slot. That usually means, you trigger the free spins every 100 or so spins and in that same time get the Fortune Re-Spin at least twice. We’ve played a session that was this great and after a good 400 spins ended the round up with 270x our stake. That’s a good time to stop playing and maybe come back to this slot another time.
But, and that’s a big but, we’ve also been incredibly frustrated the second time we played the slot for at least 400 to 500 spins, when we didn’t once get any feature at all, whether the Fortune Re-Spins or the Free Spins. That was no fun at all and we almost didn’t want to give it another try. We’re glad we gave the slot another chance, because we did have fun the third time around. So, if you find the machine to be cold, just go play something else and come back another time. You’ll be able to turn your fortune eventually.
