The Sword and the Grail is a video slot from Play’n GO with 5 reels and 20 paylines. Released in August 2019, this game can be played at online casinos such as ComeOn!, Unibet or Mr Green.

Theme and basic information

Play’n GO does epic very well indeed. Whether it’s a fantasy slot or a medieval themed slot, we get an orchestral soundtrack, compelling characters and stunning graphics. Getting into the Arthur Legend, we straddle both themes: the medieval and fantasy.

Behind the reels we see the Round Table with swords on it, fireplaces are burning and on the reels some of the most characters from Arthur Legend are spinning along. We find King Arthur, his Queen Guinevere, Merlin and apparently Sir Lancelot. This is our only complaint, because we seem to be looking at the Holy Grail legend here as well and Lancelot wasn’t among the knights of the Round Table who went searching for the Grail.

Be that as it may, the Holy Grail itself is the wild in the game and Excalibur is the scatter.

King Arthur pays out 25x our stake for a win of 5 on a payline. The Holy Grail, however, is worth more, paying 50x our stake for 5 on a payline. Guinevere is worth 12.5x our stake and the Knight as well as Merlin are both worth 7.5x our stake for 5 of a kind.

We also get playing card symbols from J to A that look like medieval coins as well as a coin with a T on it.

Random multipliers in the base game

Above the reels you’ll notice a row of multipliers of 2x, 5x, 10x and 100x. The hilt of a sword will randomly move along these multipliers and lock one of them in. For the next spin all wilds will have that multiplier. Consequently, all wins any wild may be a part of will then be multiplied.

Sometimes the multipliers will be added every few spins. Sometimes you won’t see them for 50 spins or more.

Once we managed to score a win of 40x our bet on a 100x multiplier on some of the low-value symbols. Another time we got a win with two Arthur symbols and three 10x wilds, which got us 276x our stake. After having played over 500 spins, it was the first time we truly felt the potential of the slot.

With a potential of 5 wilds each with a 100x multiplier your win would be 5,000x your stake.

Climb the ranks in the free spins

Three scatters will activate the free spin feature. This will give you 5 free spins. All swords that are on the reels will then be added to a counter atop the reels. You start your 5 free spins with a 2x multiplier wild. Adding more swords to your counter will increase your multiplier and you will receive another 5 spins with each new level.

• Knight – Collect 6 swords and get 5 additional spins plus the 5x multiplier wild
• Knight of the Round Table – Collect a total of 11 swords and get another 5 spins plus the 10x multiplier wild
• Final stage – Collect a total of 18 swords and get another 5 spins now with the 100x multiplier wild in the game

On average, the free spins are triggered every 100 spins. Half the time we managed to get at least to stage 2 and become Knights. Twice did we manage to become a Knight of the Round Table with stage 3. But we never managed to collect more than 15 swords or win anything beyond 33x our stake.

Conclusion: An epic slot that may not always deliver great results

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of The Sword and the Grail is 96.53%, which is very good value. But, as always with Play’n GO slots, this one is incredibly volatile. For the first 300 or 400 spins we lost more than we won, and the free spins were rather lacklustre, even though we triggered them fairly often.

This game can be very hard on your budget but catching the 10x or even 100x multiplier can give you everything you lost back and much more. The maximum you can win in this game is 10,000x your stake, which is indeed the Holy Grail here. But with decent payouts for the symbols and some awesome multipliers here and there it seems more possible to get to 1,000x your stake than in some other games. Whilst our biggest win was indeed the 276x our stake, we were delighted with our experiences in this slot. The same cannot be said for the free spins, which sometimes won us our stake back an no more.
