Theme and general information

With Saxon we get yet another of the heavy metal rock slots in an ever-expanding range of games from Play’n GO. Just like many of the other bands, Saxon has also been around for a few decades and you can still hear them play live and in all their glory.

Whilst some of the band members have changed over time, the lead, Peter Rodney Byford or “Biff” has been around forever and is also prominent on the reels in this game. He is the only one, mind you, though other band members would have deserved a spot on the reels as well.

As it is, the scene is set in a bar (potentially a biker bar) with bottles of liquor stacks in the back and the lights dimly lit. The whole thing feels surprisingly traditional and only the playlist of Saxon songs is an indicator that this is by no means just any old slot. You get to choose the tunes you want to play, but keep in mind that this is on the loud and heavy side.

Reel symbols include the low value card suits, which are still worth between 7x and 10x our stake for 5 of a kind. That’s pretty good for low values. The high value symbols include a shield with a helmet on it, some sort of eagle emblem and a leather biker jacket. We assume the imagery is associated with the band. These symbols pay between 20x and 30x our stake for 5 in a win.

The wild is a sword with a fiery ‘S’ for Saxon. Wilds always land fully stacked.

Biff and his Harley are the two scatters in this game, which land on reels 2 and 4 to trigger the free spins.

Bets can be placed from 0.10 to 100.00 per spin.

Stacked symbols and win multipliers

Above the reels, on the right-hand side, you’ll notice a little multiplier that changes on every spin. What changes it? The number of reels with stacked symbols at any given time.

This means if no reels are stacked with symbols, the multiplier remains at 1x. Every incident of a stacked reel will increase the multiplier by 1x. If we get a fully wild reel, the multiplier is increased by 2x. So, in theory we could land 5 reels of wilds and would get a multiplier of 10x.

And that’s a sight to behold because 5 wilds on a payline are worth 50x our stake. With the maximum multiplier in the base game, we could end up with a win of 5,000x our stake.

Multipliers are always reset between spins.

Free spins with climbing multipliers

As already mentioned, Biff and his Harley trigger the free spins. If a multiplier happens to be active when that happens, it is carried over into the free spins.

We receive a random number between 5 and 15 free spins and the multiplier will not reset between spins. Any reel of stacked symbols will continue to increase the multiplier by 1x and wild stacks by 2x.

Reaching a 10x multiplier as long as you got at least 10 free spins to start with is no problem at all and more is definitely possible.

Also, free spins can be retriggered indefinitely as long as Biff and his Harley show up, giving us again between 5 and 15 free spins each time.

Verdict: Surprisingly traditional gameplay that is still quite entertaining

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Saxon is 96.24%, which is good value. Saxon is quite volatile, but not the worst in Play’n GO’s portfolio with a rating of 8/10. And the maximum win potential is set at 10,000x our stake, which is definitely good.

In many ways, Saxon’s gameplay feels quite traditional. There is nothing overly innovative about the game, though the multipliers can be quite effective and help you along during the base game. We also didn’t find it difficult to trigger the free spins, managing to do so twice during the first 100 spins we played. Sure, that’s not an indication that things will always turn out in our favour, but it seems possible to walk away a winner here.

We were happy with nearly 300x our stake during the free spins and multipliers reaching 15x. So, if the music isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Just adjust the volume and you are still in for some decent gameplay and solid wins.
