Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Slot Review

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness is a video slot from Play’n GO with a 5×5 grid of symbols and cluster wins. Released in June 2019, you can play this game in online casinos such as PlayOjo, LeoVegas or Rizk Casino.

Theme and basic information

Rich Wilde is back for his fourth adventure. Play’n GO’s very own Indiana Jones look-alike has been to India before, visited Aztec ruins and famously brought us the Book of Dead. Now he’s back home, but he’s brought with him a creepy book that he needs to figure out. This tome of madness will challenge you and your wallet in particular, but it can also be a lot of fun.

Graphically, Tome of Madness is fantastic and among the best Play’n GO knows to offer in their online slots. We’re in a run-down hall somewhere, a fireplace burning in the background, lightning striking outside. It’s dark and mysterious – just the kind of atmosphere that invites the study of ancient tomes to unleash monsters.

Rich Wilde himself stands to the right, holding the tome. He also shows up on the reels as wild occasionally. He is a multiplier wild and will double all wins.

Since this game is played on a 5×5 grid, wins are paid out as long as four matching symbols touch each other horizontally or vertically in a cluster. The high value symbols pay between 0.7x and 2x our stake for a cluster of 4. Clusters of 10 or more are paid between 30x and 100x our stake.

The amulet showing Cthulhu is worth the most in this game (though it only shows up during the free spins), followed by the dagger, the ring and the Cthulhu head. Four lower-paying symbols are crystals with various symbols on them.

You can win up to 2,000x your stake in this online slot.

You can play this game from 0.10 to 100.00.

Avalanche wins and special wilds

This game lives off of avalanche wins. Every cluster of symbols that yields a win will explode off the grid to make room for more symbols from above. Since you need consecutive wins to get anywhere in this game, this is just as well.

Look out for the symbol on the group that is marked by the eye. When this field (which changes with every spin) is part of a winning combination, it will add special wilds to the game. One is the tome itself, which may trigger a portal effect (even if the portal isn’t fully charged) and the other is Rich Wilde with his 2x multiplier.

Activate the portal and release Cthulhu

As you keep getting consecutive wins, you’ll see the portal on the left charge up. It counts the symbols that have all been part of a winning combination and once you reach a certain number, feature will be activated:

  • Abyss – A row or column of symbols is removed, giving you a chance for new symbols and more wins
  • Void – A regular symbol is chosen and all instances of it on the grid are removed

Once you’ve filled the portal, the Other World Free spins are triggered. Now a whole grid of Eye Marks is visible behind the symbols. Random portal effects are triggered on every spin (Abyss or Void) and as you keep getting consecutive wins now, there’s no longer a portal to be activated but an eye that keeps getting filled. Plus, all the Eye Marks on the reels need to be activated as well, which happens when a symbol on this position becomes part of a win.

If you manage to activate all Eye Marks, the Cthulhu wild covering 2×2 symbol is released onto the grid, where it will travel downwards on every spin/win. It looks really cool when that happens, and this is where the biggest wins are possible.

This all sounds a little complicated, but once you played a while, you’ll figure out how this game works and it’s not so bad at all.

Conclusion: An entertaining slot that pays the big bucks when the monster shows up

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Tome of Madness is 96.59%, which is an excellent value. But this is also a highly volatile game, even if it doesn’t compare to Book of Dead. Mostly, you will get lots of small wins, but getting them consecutively is the difficulty. You want to charge the portal to get the extra features and wilds to keep going.

We’ve managed to trigger the Other World free spins roughly every 50 to 100 spins, which is pretty good. Though it is possible to play 200 spins without getting them once. Without Cthulhu, we usually walked away with about 40x our stake in winnings. With the monster, we managed to win between 65 and 115x our stake. More is possible, of course, but getting there will need a lot of luck and patience with a budget to boost you.
