Hockey Hero is one of the very few ice hockey themed slots out there and it’s rather well executed. The look of the slot is well done. You get the low-paying symbols from A to J painted on the ice, which looks cools, especially since the ice has all those scratches from the skates. Among the medium-value symbols you’ll find the puck, ice skates and a helmet. And the three hockey players are our real heroes, who always come in stacked high across four symbols, namely the entire reel, if they happen to land that way on the 5×4 reels.

The Hockey Cup is the wild symbol, which can also cover four symbols stacked high and the scatter is the goal.

The most interesting feature in the base game occurs when one of the hockey players lands fully on reel 1. It then locks into place and triggers a free re-spin. All wilds and other matching hockey players (which mostly don’t fully stack on the reels anyway) will also lock into place. Should more wilds or matching players land on the reels during the re-spin, they would also be locked in place and you’d get another re-spin. This continues until a) no more wilds or matching symbols appear, or b) the reels are covered in wilds and matching symbols. Usually the former is the case and you might not even get that far, if only the first reels is locked in place and no further relevant symbols appear on the re-spin.

The free spin feature is triggered when the goal shows up on reels 1, 3 and 5. You’re automatically awarded 5 free spins and before the action begins, one of the hockey players is randomly selected to appear more frequently than the others, potentially resulting in additional re-spins. Also, a random multiplier of up to 4x is selected before the free spins commence. It will be applied to all wins you manage to score during the free spin feature.

As such it is most definitely entertaining and therefore worth trying out. Unfortunately, we don’t get very many free spins, which is a bit of a shame. You’re never guaranteed more than those five spins and as a rule they will indeed be all you get. The re-spin feature is also not a regular occurrence, because the hockey players very rarely land fully stacked on reel 1. When they do, you may still not get a successful re-spin, though on occasion the feature will be rewarding and keep you going for a while longer. Eventually you may become frustrated with the lack of action, however, and move onto more exciting slots.
