Gems of the Gods is one of those ‘slots’ that aren’t even really slots anymore. Instead they’re fashioned after those popular mobile games where you have to align clusters of the same symbols that then vanish off the screen and leave you with points to level up, or in this case, cash wins. The gems lined up in this 5×5 grid of symbols are quite pretty. They come in various colours and shapes and have glint to them that makes them almost look real. The red gem has the highest value and the green one the lowest. There’s also a gold coin, or rather, three gold coins, that sit atop reel 1, 3 and 5. They fall down onto the reels, if you manage to clear the symbols below. They’re simultaneously the game’s scatter symbol and its wild.

The base game doesn’t have wilds, mind you. What they do have is the lightning bolt symbol. Whenever that shows up, lightning will strike across the symbols and turn lower value symbols into higher value symbols, potentially creating new and better winning combinations. This feature is also active during free spins.

One of the main features of the game is the multiplier meter. It sits on the right-hand side and will climb with every consecutive win from 1x (the default) to 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x. For every cluster that yields a win and then vanishes of the screen, the multiplier climbs once. With consecutive wins, the multiplier keeps on climbing. You will rarely get more than two or three of them, but when you do it’s pretty cool.

Free spins are only activated, if you manage to clear all the symbols below at least one of the gold coins, so it lands in the allotted slot at the bottom of the reel. When it does, two things happen: a) you get five free spins and b) the gold coin turns wild, but only the one that activated the free spins.

We’ll be taken to a temple, where all gold coins return to their usual position, but at least one of them (the one that activated the feature) will have turned wild now. With a lot of luck, it is possible to turn all three coins wild, if they all landed in the appropriate slot to activate the free spins. You’ll only ever get 5 free spins, but three wild symbols can create huge wins. And, as already mentioned, the lightning feature is also active during free spins. Needless to say, the multiplier remains available here as well.

The theoretical RTP (return to player) for Gems of the Gods is 96.55%. That is very good value and though the game appears somewhat slow going in the beginning, its value becomes apparent once you’ve hit the free spin feature.
