Once again, we get the African savannah as a slot theme. There are plenty of those around, whether they’re featuring lion or rhinos or any other African animal. Some look fantastic. Other games look a little worse for wear, if you will.
Pride and Prey is somewhere in between. The lion cub is really cute, whilst the female lion looks like she’s been in accident. The lion king himself just barely manages to look majestic, the giraffe looks slightly silly.
There’s also a wild inconsistency in the graphics department for individual symbols beyond that. The low-value symbols look so different in style that they could very well be part of a different slot. There’s just a little too much going on here and it’s not attractive.
The background scene, the actual African savannah, is really beautifully drawn. We want more of that, okay?
Anyway, the Wild is the most valuable symbol, paying out 20x our stake for 5 on a payline. The Pride and Prey logo follows with 15x our stake. The paw print is worth 12.5x our stake and the female lion 10x for 5 on a payline. The lion cub pays out 7.5x our stake for such a win and the zebra still 5x.
The lion king himself is the scatter and only lands on reels 1, 3 and 5.
You can play this game from 0.10 to 200.00.
The main feature in the base game are the rewards. You’ll trigger those simply by playing the slot and achieving certain goals.
How high the rewards will be, depends on your stake, but they tend to be a multiple of it anyway. So, 5 non-winning spins in a row give you 1x your average stake contribution. 10 non-winning spins in a row pay out 15x your average contributing stake. Win 5x in a row and you get 2x your average contributing stake as a reward.
During the free spins you can also get extra rewards with a little luck.
Some of these rewards can climb significantly and pay out handsomely, if you have the patience. But it does mean playing for quite some time.
When you get three lion scatters on the reels, you will receive 8 free spins. During the free spins, a paw slashing across the reels can leave extra wilds, which is the main feature here.
It’s possible to re-trigger the free spins, which will give you an additional 8 spins. Also, you’d receive a reward for doing so. You’d get 10x the stake at the time of re-triggering the feature.
The free spins can be hit and miss. The wins will be worthwhile only in combination with a reward, which we were lucky enough to experience once. But that took a long time. We didn’t even get the free spins once during our fist 500 spins of playing this slot.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Pride and Prey is 97.52%, which is an incredible value. This slot comes with a medium volatility, so wins can happen regularly enough but not usually that big.
In fact, it’s easier to win the 5x winning-in-a-row reward that the 5 non-winnings spins reward. So, at least where the wins are concerned, this game feels quite balanced. You can keep your budget up nicely, most of the time. And the rewards are helpful. But to see good wins, you’ll have to keep playing for quite some time.
We’ve played worse slots, but we’ve also played much better ones. If it weren’t for the excellent RTP, there would be hardly a reason to recommend this game at all.
