Rich Wilde is up for a new quest after already having been to South America and India in the previous two slots featuring this intrepid adventurer. This time he’s headed for Egypt and you’ll be forgiven if you believe that this slot appears to be awfully familiar. After all, it bears striking resemblance in theme and mechanics to the iconic evergreen Book of Ra Deluxe by Novomatic. We’re inclined to consider Book of Dead a homage rather than a rip-off and Novomatic appears to do the same, otherwise they would have done something by now.
On the reels you’ll find the beautifully in-laid playing card symbols from A to 10 as well as four high-paying symbols featuring a golden pharaoh mask, Anubis, a blue Horus and Rich Wilde himself. The Book of Dead itself features as the wild and the scatter in one. All high-value symbols pay out as soon as you get at least two of them. Rich Wilde manages a payout of 5,000 coins if you get five of him on a payline. Even the wild symbol pays out, if you get two in a row.
If you know Book of Ra Deluxe, you know what to expect here. A highly volatile game with very infrequent wins during the base game and a very exciting free spin feature, which is triggered once three scatters appear anywhere on the reels. Once the free spins are activated, which will be a rare occurrence, another symbol will convert into a wild and expand on the reels whenever you get at two or three of it on the reels, depending on whether it is a low-paying or high-value symbol. They’ll always pay out across all 10 paylines, in addition to the normal wild/scatter, of course. You can retrigger the feature if you get at least another three Book of Dead scatters during the free spins.
The theoretical RTP (return to player) for Book of Dead is 96.21%. That’s actually really good and a lot better than what Book of Ra offers. But it won’t feel that way. Book of Dead is very volatile, and the wins are small and few and far. Free spins are not activated very often. In fact, we played 400 spins and didn’t get them once. But fret not, because they tend to be really awesome once they do come around and you are likely going to want to stay and see that. Your main problem will be your budget, and your patience. If you can make it through 200 spins without despairing, you’ll be able to hit the free spins sooner rather than later. Plus, Book of Dead is much more attractive than the game it is fashioned after. It’s more easily available and comes with much better effects and sound. The one time we hit the free spins, Anubis was converted into a wild and our €2 stake brought us a €415 win. So, yeah, it’s possible that this slot makes you very happy indeed.
