Theme and basic information

Once again, we get a slot with an ancient Aztec theme. But it’s not a copy/paste style as we’ve sometimes seen lately, where we only get big blocks with vaguely Maya, Inca or Aztec inspired animal carvings and symbols. Whilst such symbols can be found here as well, for once we also get to Aztec warriors on the reels, one male and one female.

The temple setting is also pretty stunning, though, oddly there’s a river flowing through the temple, which is certainly new. Regardless, graphics are awesome as we’ve come to expect in some of Play’n GO greatest slots.

The graphic details are well done and worth paying attention to. It’s a great-looking slot and you’ll discover new things all the time. The soundtrack sounds unexpectedly futuristic, however, but it’s okay to let it play at low volume.

The phoenix wild (which looks absolutely stunning) is the most valuable symbol, paying out 25x our stake for 5 on a payline. The female warrior pays out 10x our stake for such a win and the male warrior pays out 7.5x time our stake. Then we get panther, snake and bird, all worth 3.75x our stake for 5 on a payline. Finally, the low-paying symbols are those rock carvings we mentioned, though some of them have been inspired by the card suit symbols (diamonds, hearts, clubs and spades).

Whilst we get a pretty classic set of 5 reels here, they are 6 rows high, which is unusual, especially since we only get 30 paylines here. The three most valuable symbols, however, always come stacked (in the case of the wild, it will expand).

Expanding wilds in the base game

The base game is surprisingly uneventful here. We spin away waiting for the golden mask scatter to make an appearance. In the meantime, we’re waiting for wilds to land in advantageous spots so that it may expand and grant some winnings. It’s always a beautiful thing to see when the wild phoenix expands on the reels.

Sometimes you get a wild on every spin, though it may not win you anything. Sometimes you get more than one wild and big wins are possible even in the base game. But you’ll really be waiting to hit the free spins.

Guaranteed wilds in the free spins

You need at least three scatters on the reels to activate 7 free spins. With four scatters you’ll get 12 free spins and five scatters will give you 20 free spins. Generally, you can expect to get 7 free spins to start with, though.

During the free spins, you will get one guaranteed wild anywhere on the reels. That is on top of any other wilds that may land on the reels to expand. We’ve seen four expanded wilds on the reels, though five are, in theory, possible. And that could very well pay you 5,000x your bet in winnings.

You can retrigger the free spins by getting at least three more scatters on the reels, which would give you another 7 free spins. Though just two additional scatters will already give you three more spins. And that’s totally feasible.

Conclusion: A beautiful and extremely volatile slot that can pay out incredibly well

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Phoenix Reborn is 96.5%, which is well above average and an excellent value. That said, however, Phoenix Reborn is also one of the most volatile slots in Play’n GO’s portfolio and careful budgeting is a must. Unless you are as lucky as we have been.

We will have to admit, we’re absolutely biased towards this slot, because we were able to activate the free spins within our first 10 rounds of playing. And then again, a couple of spins later. During those first 15 minutes of playing with two free spin rounds, we won over 250x our stake and pretty much called it a day.

Of course, we weren’t always this lucky. But when you are, take your winnings and move on. You won’t be so lucky a second time. Phoenix Reborn is a beautiful but also extremely volatile slot. You may get expanding wilds at least once every 10 spins, but they may not always land in a beneficial position. And this slot can eat up your funds long before you hit the free spins the first time. Granted, the free spins can be absolutely worth it and usually you’ll see between 60x and more your stake returned. But getting there is difficult.
