Theme and general information

The Panther’s Reign online slot takes us to the jungle of the Amazon, where the panther reigns supreme. Interestingly, Quickspin, who often make rather cartoonish-looking slots, decided to go against their tried and true approach, trying out something new.

So, they set out to ‘create an animal-focused game, something with more realistic looking animals than you’d normally find in our slots.’ There’s nothing wrong with that and one is inclined to say they did a good job. Graphically, Quickspin always develops great-looking slots, and Panther’s reign is certainly easy on the eyes.

The reels are set in front of a waterfall in the middle of the jungle somewhere. Mind you, this is a very friendly jungle without any annoying bugs or other dangerous animals lurking in the foliage or amongst the shadows of the trees.

On the reels, we find the low value card suit symbols set in stone as well as various animals of the jungle, including monkey, frog, parrot, jaguar and the panther.

The wild is golden, has ‘WILD’ written on it and a slash from the claws of the panther’s paw. The scatter is an abstract stone snake wrapped around a green jewel.

The payouts are decent in this game. The panther pays 100x our stake for 5 on a payline. The jaguar and the monkey follow with 25x our stake for such a win. Parrot and frog are worth 15x our stake for 5 of their kind.

Spraying Wilds for big wins

There is one random feature in the game, which occurs in the base game as well as in the free spins. It’s called Wild Spray. When it is triggered in the base game, 3 to 10 wilds will be added randomly to the reels. This can result in awesome wins if your luck holds true.

During the free spins, up to 7 wilds are added when the feature is triggered.

Free Spins with Re-Spins for every win

We need at least three scatters to receive 5 free spins. Beyond that, every additional scatter landing on the triggering spin will award +2 free spins, which means we can get a maximum of 22 free spins for a screen full of scatters (apparently that is an option).

During the free spins, a familiar feature is added that holds symbols of a winning combination in place and during a free re-spin, all other symbols will spin, hopefully giving us more matching symbols, wilds or new winning combinations once they stop.

As long as the winning cluster keeps expanding, the re-spins will keep coming. Only when no more matching symbols or wilds land on the reels or we have indeed a screen full of matching symbols and wilds, will the re-spins stop, and the win is paid out.

The more free spins you start out with, the better your chance and getting more re-spins. With only five free spins, you may only get 2 re-spins.

Verdict: A solid slot that can yield good wins but doesn’t quite pack a punch

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Panther’s Reign is 96.25%, which is good, though not excellent given that this is a highly volatile slot. Careful budgeting is definitely recommended as you may be disappointed by the free spins.

In many ways, the Panther’s Reign video slot is a bit of a mixed bag. The game looks good and the features are okay. The Wild Spray doesn’t appear all that much, but it can be absolutely worthwhile. We got our biggest win of 210x our stake in the game thanks to seven or eight extra wilds.

Triggering just 5 free spins (which is what happens most of the time) never feels like enough, especially if you only land one win and subsequent re-spin. Our biggest win thanks to one of those re-spins ended up being just slightly above 160x our stake.

Given that the maximum win is 5,202x our stake, we didn’t even come close.

Panther’s Reign is a solid slot that looks good and offers decent gameplay. But it is likely going to be a short-lived experience and you’ll eventually forget that this slot exists.
