The heist is on in Operation Diamond Hunt. You might think that the thieves are after jewels, given the title of the slot. But the scene is set in a museum that would make Versailles green with envy so richly it is decorated. Pay close attention to the details. The ceilings are high, chandeliers are visible, the walls are finely carved. On both sides of the massive hallway we find statues.
The opening screen shows us the lights of the lasers securing the valuable. And if you glance carefully at the middle of the reels, you will find a glass case that holds a massive diamond. Underneath, it says “Royal Diamond of the Queen”. And that is probably the diamond this operation is aiming for.
At least the background is very grand and looks great. The symbols on the reels are somewhat average, however. All the low-value symbols from 10 to A are studded with diamonds, which is a nice touch. Among the high-value symbols we get a roulette wheel, a gun, a speed boat, a diamond studded watch and a Ferrari. They all pay out as long as you have at least two of them on the reels.
The three robbers appear as wild symbols. The regular wild is a guy with a gun. The two other wilds only appear in the free spins.
Another thing to take note of is the unusual reel layout. In this game, we get reels that are 3x4x5x5x4x3 symbols high. That’s how it is possible that we end up with 3,600 ways to win.
You can play this game from 0.40 per spin to 20.00 per spin, unless you activate the golden symbols.
In the base game, you get only one golden symbol as a standard throughout. That’s the speedboat. On the left-hand side of the reels you will be able to activate two more gold symbols: the Ferrari and the gun. The roulette wheel and watch cannot be upgraded this way.
Now, all the golden symbols are framed in gold and the red Ferrari becomes a golden one. And the gun is golden, too.
With all three golden symbols activate, the minimum bet increases to 1.10 per spin. The maximum would now be 55.00. It also increases your RTP from 94.07 to 97.27, which is considerable. If you can afford the rather high minimum bet at this stage, the increase is worth it.
Three scatters (the diamond) trigger the free spins in this game. You start out with 8 free spins and will have as many gold symbols as you had in the base game. Two more wilds are now added to the reels, the 2x wild and the 3x wild.
As we have seen with other Kalamba games before, however, we don’t get a standard multiplier with these wilds. Instead, the 2x wild counts as 2 symbols (whichever ones are needed to create a win) and the 3x wild counts as three matching symbols. It’s a little odd, but it seems to work.
Landing two more scatters on the reels will give you +3 spins each time.
Instead of triggering the free spins the old-fashioned way, you also have the option to buy free spins. You can choose whether you want to play with 1, 2 or 3 gold symbols and will pay a premium to play the free spins. In our experience, this is not worth it. You’ll end up winning your stake back but hardly more. Simply waiting to trigger the free spins with 3 scatters was much more worthwhile in our case.
Finally, there are three jackpots in this game. This is triggered by collecting a minimum of 16 gold symbols on the reels. Here, the 2x and 3x multipliers in the free spins can help as they count as 2 or 3 additional gold symbols.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Operation Diamond Hunt is 94.07 to 97.27%, depending on how many gold symbols you play with. At the low end, the payout rate is abysmal. At the high end, it is excellent. But here you have to consider that the lowest wager starts at 1.10 already, which is quite steep for the budget minded.
We found Operation Diamond Hunt to be quite entertaining. There’s lots going on, you have the chance at some decent wins, especially in the free spins, and you could even trigger a jackpot.
Indeed, we did get the silver jackpot once and a successful free spin round won us over 100x our stake. When we bought the free spins, we only just made our stake back, which is why we don’t think it’s a worthwhile investment.
Operation Diamond Hunt may not look like the most sophisticated slot and it can eat up your budget, if you are not careful. But it can also be quite fun for a while.
