Ocean’s Treasure takes us under the sea once more. It’s not NetEnt’s first underwater slot, though it’s not simply about pretty corals and colourful fish. Instead, we could almost see ourselves in the ruins of sunken Atlantis. The reel frame would indicate as much. We’re looking at a stone structure that shows us a stone Kraken, massive shells and two stone guardians, each on one side.
In the background, we can also guess at sunken temples and palaces. Visually, NetEnt shows us once more what they are capable of. The detail is beautiful, the graphics are crisp and clear, and the colours pack a nice punch. The soundtrack is also reminding of us cool underwater adventures.
On the reels, we find the low value playing card symbols from J to A, all adorned with seaweed, as well as high value symbols that include a message in a bottle, a mysterious key, a compass and a crystal formation with gold. The trident is the regular 1×1 wild and we get a beautiful Nereid (an underwater nymph) as a special 1×3 wild. The treasure chest is the scatter in this game.
The crystal/gold clump is the most valuable symbol, paying out 100x our stake for 5 on a payline. The message in a bottle follows with 70x our stake for such a win. The compass is still worth 40x our stake for 5 of its kind. And that strange key pays 30x our stake for such a win.
You can play this game from 0.15 to 300.00 per spin in somewhat unusual increments.
The base game is pretty, but that’s about all you can say about it because nothing much happens beyond spinning the reels. We are usually waiting for the free spins to hit, which they do surprisingly regularly.
We need three scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 for 10 free spins to trigger. The scenery changes slightly and now the wild plays a bit more of an important role. Whenever it lands during the free spins, it add +2 spins to the counter, and it fills a meter above the reels. That meter comprises of two spaces that need to be filled and when that happens, the scenery changes again and the multiplier rises by 2x.
When the free spins kick off, the multiplier already sits at 3x on every win. It then climbs to 5x, 7x, 9x and finally 12x. That means once we’ve seen 8 wilds on the reels, we can look forward to a 12x multiplier on all remaining wins. Since wilds keep coming, we could play a total of 102 free spins here.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Ocean’s Treasure is 95.99%, which is a little below average (especially for NetEnt) and somewhat disappointing. This is a medium volatility slot, which means you don’t really feel it as wins are regular enough. Still, we would have expected more from NetEnt.
At the same time, free spins are triggered regularly, which is helpful and certainly redeems the disappointing RTP. However, the maximum possible win is also just 1,200x our stake, which comes about during the free spins, if we manage to get to the 12x multiplier and score a win of 5 crystal/gold clumps on a payline.
On the whole, Ocean’s Treasure is a great-looking online slot and it is fun to play. The visuals are wonderfully immersive, and the soundtrack adds its bit as well. But somehow, we would have liked a bit more of a punch or another feature that adds something to the base game. We do get a solid and likeable slot here, but it won’t be our go-to slot for excitement and big wins.
