Hot as Hades Slot Review
Hot as Hades is a video slot from Microgaming with 5 reels and 20 fixed paylines. You can play Hot as Hades at online casinos such as Mr Green, Guts.com or LeoVegas.
Theme and game basics
Ancient Greece as a theme is nothing new in the realm of online slots. But it has never been done in quite the same way as it is done in this game. Hades is the main character of the slot and he’s a cheeky one. Zeus, Poseidon, Medusa and the three-headed dog Cerberus, very much Hades’ pet, appears on the reels alongside Hades. Since Hades is the god of the underworld, the setting is a bit hellish, so to speak. Animations are superb, especially once you hit the bonus feature, and Hades’ and Cerberus’ antics are adding a lot of entertainment to what’s happening on the reels. The background music is orchestral and quite suitable to the theme.
Hades is the most valuable of the characters, offering 50x your stake in a 5-of-a-kind win. The other characters follow behind. In addition, we get Microgaming’s generic playing card symbols from 10 to A as the low value symbols. The Hot as Hades symbol stands in as the wild and the scatter is a crystal helmet. Both are worth 100x your stake in a 5-of-a-kind win. It is possible to win a top coin prize of 100,000 coins in this slot.
Gameplay and features
Hot as Hades brings us a Super Modus in the base game that is randomly activated. You get 5 free spins and a total of three wilds that Hades will randomly add to the reels during the course of those free spins. It comes around frequently enough to keep your funds up and add to the fun, especially since Hades gets quite creative when adding those wilds to the reels.
The main feature is, of course, the Quest Bonus, where Hades is going on a quest to find the crystal helmet. The feature is triggered when you collect at least three crystal helmet scatters on the reels. You have to make it through several levels in order to finally get a chance to find the helmet:
Level 1 – Pillars of Awesomeness – Pick an amphora and reveal a coin prize before moving on. A win all option is available as well.
Level 2 – Medusa’s Gaze – Choose a gateway to continue past Medusa’s searching gaze. Once again, coin prizes await, but if you pick Medusa, she’ll turn you to stone.
Level 3 – Poseidon’s Ocean – Select a shell and grab a coin prize to proceed. Two options could end the game here.
Level 4 – Zeus’ Stairway – Pick among five clouds to either grab coin wins or be zapped by lightning (two clouds will zap you).
Level 5 – Chamber of the Crystal Skull – If you manage to ascend the stairs, you’re presented with two chests, one of which contains the main prize.
More often than not you won’t get past Zeus, or even Poseidon, but it’s a lot of fun to keep trying and the animations in this part of the game are superb and worth coming back to.
Conclusion
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Hot as Hades is 96.75%, which is excellent value. The game is possibly one of the most fun and quirkiest Microgaming has ever created and Hades as a character is so likeable that you’ll keep playing long after you’ve managed to grab the Crystal Helmet. The game is creative and doesn’t get boring and usually you’ll be up on your funds, thanks also to the Super Modus free spins, which is a rare feature and a welcome addition here.
We truly wish Microgaming would make more such fun and unique games instead of mostly giving us run-of-the-mill slots.
