Theme and game basics

EmotiCoins is Microgaming’s offering to the emoji and emoticon hype that hit us especially in 2017. They made a whole emoji movie and competitor NetEnt released their Emoji Planet slot the same month as EmotiCoins came out. The two slots couldn’t be more different and thus, comparison is difficult. EmotiCoins goes the more classic way, giving us five reels and five different emojis (the cool one, the kissing one, the grinning one, the cheeky winking one and the one that just winks) as high paying symbols, winning us between 13 and 28 times our stake. Additionally, we get the playing card symbols from 10 to A, which is rather boring but quite typical for a Microgaming slot.
Scatters (the LOL symbol) are the most valuable symbol, winning us 100x our bet in a 5-of-a-kind win, whereas five wilds will still win us 50x our bet. As usual, wilds and scatters are the most valuable symbols in a Microgaming slot.
The theme is bright, friendly and easy-going with a fun background sound and nothing much to complain about. It’s not as innovative or interesting as Emoji Planet, but you’ll get something to enjoy here as well.

Gameplay and features

The base game comes with a surprise for us that tends to keep us going for a while: the Wild Blast. On any given spin up to five wilds could be added randomly to the reels, offering up additional wins. Wilds are a common occurrence on the reels anyway, but this certainly adds some potential for wins. Usually, you’ll get two or three extra wilds and the feature doesn’t hit too often either.
Three or more LOL scatters will trigger the free spins. And this one is very unusual for a Microgaming bonus. You’ll get 10 free spins and on every other spin you will receive a random wild anywhere on the reels that will then remain sticky for the remainder of the spins.
At the end of the feature you will have collected a total of 5 sticky wilds, which will almost guarantee some good wins. Indeed, with a little luck every spin may well turn into a winning spin, which is a rarity among just about all available slots out there. We know of very few that come with guaranteed wins on every spin and usually you’ll only get a few of those.

Conclusion

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for EmotiCoins is 96.01%, which is surprisingly low. Indeed, given that the free spins tend to hit every 50 to 100 spins and usually give you wins above 20x your stake, the return seems lower than we’d have expected. Of course, if you hit a dry spell and no Wild Blast shows up for a while, the game could become a bit of a drain. But generally, we found it to be more giving than taking.
In comparison to Emoji Planet, EmotiCoins is a very simple slot, but we nevertheless found it entertaining enough to keep playing for a while.
