Mermaids Galore comes with a pretty underwater theme and a score of mermaids. We get cartoon-style drawings here, which are leaning heavily towards Japanese style Mangas. Our five mermaids have tiny button noses, each different hair colours and those favoured huge eyes that we see in Mangas.
Still, the game is fairly simple in its drawings, even the mermaids don’t offer much intricate detail. It’s cute though, if you like that sort of thing.
The soundtrack is light and catchy as well, which fits the theme nicely.
The reel setup is somewhat unusual because we get a reels et pf 5x4x3x4x5 rows across the five reels. That’s how we end up with 1,200 ways to win.
The five mermaids are the high value symbols on the reels, of course. They’re each worth a little over 1x our stake for five of their kind. There are also six gem-like symbols, which are the low-value symbols. It’s all bright and colourful and very pleasing to look at.
You can play this game from 0.38 to 380.00 per spin, making it suitable for all budgets.
In the base game, you’ll notice the five mermaid icons on the left-hand side. An info button shows you what the purpose of these is. You can select to add a gold trim to any number of the five mermaids, though one will have a gold trim at least. If you add gold trims to all of them, the overall value of the possible wins as well as your bet size increase. Activating all five mermaids, would increase your lowest bet to 1.80. However, the payout for five of the mermaids then comes in between 1.25x and 2.5x your bet, which is not that great.
So, we don’t really think that the payouts are worth the increase in your bet. However, your RTP increases to 97.52%, if you play with all five gold symbols and that makes it worthwhile.
Additionally, wild symbols can have multipliers of 2x or 3x attached. Here the multiplier means that the wild is worth 2 or 3 of the symbols it replaces.
The free spins are triggered through 3 bonus scatters. Now the 2x and 3x wild symbols are in play, which can be quite beneficial. You get 10 free spins and any 2 additional bonus scatters on the reels will awards +3 spins.
You can also buy the free spins. Depending on how many gold symbols you want to play with, the free spins will cost extra. Since the return in the free spins as we experienced them is only a little more than your investment, it might not be worth it.
Finally, you can also win three jackpots by collecting 15, 17 or 19 of the mermaids on the reels. They have to have the gold trim, though. With your bet size the size of the jackpot also increases, of course.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Mermaids Galore is up to 97.52%, which is excellent and more than most other slots we’ve reviewed for you. But is the slot really worth it? It’s a pretty game, sure, and it’s reasonably entertaining. It sounds a lot more complicated on paper than it is, mind you.
But we were also a little bored after a while. The gameplay isn’t exciting for very long. At first, the fun soundtrack and bright symbols will make you smile and try out the game. But unless you buy the free spins, you may not want to wait around for very long to trigger them through the scatters.
Ultimately, you have to have some decent wins and the maximum payout here is only 2,667x your bet, which is like the value of the highest jackpot. And getting that seems a little out of reach. So, go ahead and check Mermaids Galore out. With a little luck, it might be a winner for you. But ultimately, most slot players will seek more thrilling games.
