Theme and general information

Once more we encounter the wizard/sorcerer Merlin in a slot. Either he is almost kingly or knightly like the knights of Arthurian legend. Or he is more of a cartoonish character in long robes and a pointy hat. In Merlin’s Magic Mirror we’re looking at the later version of his incarnation.

It’s well done, though. Yes, cartoonish, and for some reason we’re in a cave, but the graphics are colourful, lively and well-executed.

There’s a sort of fairy tale soundtrack accompanying the whole thing, giving us some upbeat music to either bounce along to or turn off.

On the reels, we get playing card symbols from 10 to A encased in gemstones, a potion’s bottle, a spell book, an owl and Merlin himself. He’s worth 25x our stake for 5 of his kind. The owl still pays out half that in such a winning combination.

We also get a scatter and a wild, neither of which have a monetary value, however.

Three features in the base game

The base game can drag out a little if none of the features show up. But if they do, things get interesting enough to keep us going for a while longer.

Merlin has a few tricks up his sleeve, and these may show up randomly here and there.

• Merlin’s Magic Mirror Re-spins – If you land three symbols of the same kind on reel 1, the Magic Mirror Re-spins are triggered, whereby the Magic Mirrors will reveal a random symbol and stay sticky on the reels. We get a re-spin and any symbols of the same kind will be locked in place as well. If no more symbols of the same kind land, re-spins will end, and wins are paid out.
• Wizard Wilds – After a winning spin, Merlin can change a random number of symbols into wilds.
• Merlin’s Mystery Magic – On a losing spin, Merlin can transform a random number of symbols into one symbol and form potential wins.

Don’t expect to see these features often or with great results, but at least they liven things up.

Free spins with Magic Mirrors

Land at least three scatters on the reels to activate 10 free spins. Any scatters now in view will become Magic Mirrors and stay locked in place. At the end of each spin, we either get a coin prize revealed for each Magic Mirror symbol or the same symbol is revealed to hopefully form a winning combination.

More Magic Mirrors (i.e. more scatters) can land during the free spins and remain locked in place as well. It’s not possible to retrigger the free spins.

Verdict: A great little slot with some interesting features

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Merlin’s Magic Mirror is 95.96, which is slightly below average. The slot has a medium to high volatility, so wins won’t come often. All things considered, the numbers aren’t that great, especially since the maximum win is only 720x our stake in a single spin.

This slot is not for high rollers or hard hitters, in other words. Then again, the cartoonish theme and light atmosphere is hardly for those looking for a thrilling adventure anyway.

Merlin’s Magic Mirror can be fun as long as the features keep showing up and your budget isn’t stretched too far. But if you hit a dry spell, not even charming Merlin can magic your sour mood away.
