Once again, we get an Egyptian themed slot from NetEnt. It’s a wildly popular theme though rarely do the games break any sort of mould. In many ways, Mercy of the Gods doesn’t bring much new to the table either when it comes to the theme. We get, for once, a female archaeologist/adventurer, but a range of fairly typical symbols to add to the theme as well.
However, the background has been stunningly rendered. In the base game, we’re outside a temple and two jackal statues frame the reels. A light breeze moves the palm leaves and birds fly through the sky in the far distance. The attention to detail here is lovely. Once we move to the new screens when playing the jackpot game or the free spins, no less attention to detail has been paid. The 3D graphics are beautifully done, and they bring Ancient Egypt to life like few other slots with this theme have managed to do.
Our adventure in this game comes with the highest value and she pays out 1,600 coins for 5 on a payline. The falcon pays out 1,200 for such a win and the scarab framed by cobras pays out 900 coins for 5 of its kind. The little Egyptian figurine pays out 700 coins for this kind of win. The remaining symbols are the royal cards from J to A.
You can play this game from 0.20 to 100.00.
The question, of course, is whether this game holds up in gameplay what it offers in graphics. We’re inclined to say yes, thanks to those wild re-spins. Whenever a wild symbol lands on the reels, you start getting free re-spins as the wild moves down by one position on each spin. As long as a wild is on the reels, you keep getting free spins.
Every now and then a 2x wild multiplier will show up to give you multiplier wins on every winning combination it is part of.
Also, these re-spins are your best chance at triggering the jackpot game, but more on that below.
Finally, the wild may randomly expand to cover the whole reel and continue to give you more free re-spins.
The free spins are very difficult to come by. We only got them once during at least 500 spins we played. And we didn’t find them particularly worthwhile either.
Depending on whether you trigger the free spins with 3, 4 or 5 scatters, you’ll get 5, 8 or 12 free spins. During the free spins, a wild landing anywhere on the reels will expand to cover the whole reel and trigger the Gift of Life re-spins. This may happen once or twice when you get 5 free spins, which is typically the case. So, in reality it will feel as if you’re getting more than just 5 spins.
The jackpot game hits far more often than the free spins, mind you. You need to collect at least three heart coins to activate it. This can suddenly happen by landing three coins on the reels in one spin (which happened to us once), but more likely it will happen during the Gift of Life wild re-spins. Every heart coin you collect during the re-spins, will be collected by the jackal on the right-hand side.
Once again, you need three to activate the jackpot game. Once the wild re-spins are done, the jackpot game is activated. All the coins you managed to collect during the re-spins (at least three, but more are better) will now be added to the reels randomly.
The reels will start spinning and only heart coins will land on them, if any land at all. Mostly the spaces will remain empty. You start off with 3 spins and lose a spin every time no new coin is added to the reels. Whenever a new coin is added, however, your free spins are reset to 3. This continues until you either have filled up all the reels with the coins or you get no coins on 3 consecutive spins.
The three jackpots available are:
We usually triggered the jackpot game at least once every 50 to 100 spins. And half the time we won the Minor jackpot.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Mercy of the Gods is 96.64%, which is excellent value. But this game is surprisingly volatile, so mind your budget.
Beyond that, the mechanics of this online progressive jackpot are obviously very familiar. They are almost the same as Divine Fortune. The difference is that Mercy of the Gods has the better RTP and here you can win 1,600x your stake in a single spin, more than on Divine Fortune. But the Greek-themed slot is a little bit more forgiving on your budget. If you don’t know which of the two games to choose, go with the one that holds the bigger progressive jackpot.
Both games are equally fun to play and are good options if you like to go in for the local progressive jackpot slots.
