Honey Rush is a video slot from Play’n GO with a hexagonal grid of 37 symbols and cluster wins. Released in November 2019, this game can be played at online casinos such as Mr Green, Maria Casino or Vera&John.
Honey Rush takes its inspiration from the bees. Given that bees are endangered, any kind of attention is good attention in our book. Plus, it’s not the first slot that features bees front and centre.
Play’n GO likes to be clever in their slots and their thankfully not married to classic slot setups of 5 reels and 3 rows either. When bees are the theme of choice then we get bees in all aspects of this slot. As such, the ‘reels’ are actually a hexagonal grid of 4-5-6-7-6-5-4 symbols. In total, we get 37 symbols on this grid.
Graphically, the game has a cartoon feel to it and the setting is in a forest somewhere. It’s beautifully drawn, even if we don’t get to see a single bee in this slot.
Clusters of 5 or more adjacent (touching at least on one side of the hexagon) matching symbols are required to create a winning combination here.
Featured are four different kinds of flowers on the reels, which are worth 20x our stake for a cluster of 35+. The bronze, silver and gold coins are the high-value symbols, paying out 50x our stake for clusters of 25x or even 200x our stake for a full screen of them. The inclusion of these coins strikes us as a little strange, but okay. It keeps the look of the clusters tidier than if the high-value symbols had been various types of bees.
The wild is a honey pot and there is no scatter in the game.
You can play this slot from 0.20 to 100.00 per spin.
Slots that use cluster pays usually also offer cascading wins, which are important to trigger any features the game might offer. This is true for Honey Rush as well. Any winning cluster is removed from the grid, making room for new symbols to fill the space from above.
On the left-hand side you can see the recent wins and combinations. On the bottom right-hand side, we see a meter. This needs to be charged with wins. All symbols in a winning combination are added to the meter. Consecutive wins make it possible to fill the meter.
You can reach four levels by doing that. The first three levels are reached by collecting 20, 40 and 80 symbols (in total). Whenever a new level is reached, a Drone Colony is added to the reels, which creates a minimum of 7 clusters, guaranteeing another win. Additionally, a wild is added to the reels, which makes further wins easier. The wild is moving positions on the reels as long as it becomes part of a winning combination.
Once you have collected a total of 80 winning symbols, you will have three wilds jumping around on the grid. Those wilds can be equipped with a multiplier of up to 3x.
When you have this feature going, you will simply keep on watching the wins pile up and once you manage to collect a total of 160 winning symbols, the Queen Colony is activated, which can add a cluster of usually at least 20 symbols but up to 37 symbols.
With some multiplier wilds in the mix, you can thus reach wins of up to 9,000x your stake in this game.
Additionally, on a non-winning spin a random Worker Colony can also be triggered, which can leave clusters of up to 15 symbols behind.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Honey Rush is 96.5%, which is great value. However, casinos may be able to lower that to as little as 94.5%, which is not. Keep in mind that Honey Rush is also very volatile, which is true for most Play’n GO slots.
Still, when we tried the game, we found it very rewarding. Sure, you can have dry spells and get stuck at only creating one wild on the reels, resetting the meter more often than not. But we have managed to trigger the Queen Colony on several occasions and won a total of over 300x our stake by the time we finished playing.
When you get this far and some of your wilds even have multipliers, you will really appreciate the thought and clever features that have gone into this game. It may look complicated at first, but it really isn’t. In fact, it is much simpler than you might think, and it is a lot of fun. Unless you keep losing, in which case you might want to find a more forgiving game. But you won’t find one with such a clever gameplay.
